Full professor at the University of Valencia since 2024, specializing in Spanish pragmatics, oral and conversational Spanish, and interaction. She obtained a degree in Hispanic Philology in 2002, and a PhD in Spanish Language in 2009, both recognized with extraordinary awards for her academic performance.
Her research career has focused on the pragmatics of spoken Spanish, addressing the study of discourse markers from diachronic and synchronic perspectives. She has explored the grammaticalization of discourse markers and constructions with discursive value, as well as broader phenomena such as the structure and units of conversation, evidentiality, mitigation, prosody, and corpus linguistics. She is the coordinator, along with Marta Albelda, of the Ameresco corpus of colloquial conversations in America and Spain, and of the ESPRINT corpus of conflictive communication among intimates in Spanish, which contains domestic conversations and couple therapies collected in Spain and Latin America.
She has published numerous articles in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Pragmatics, Journal of Politeness Research, Pragmatics and Society, Corpus Pragmatics, RILCE, Oralia, and others, and book chapters with prestigious publishers such as Peter Lang and John Benjamins. Additionally, she has been actively involved in international conferences and symposia, often as an invited speaker at renowned institutions like the University of Cambridge, Universiteit Antwerpen, and Universität Heidelberg.
She has continuously participated, from the beginning, in funded research projects, and has been linked to more than eight projects throughout her career, two of which she has led as principal investigator. Moreover, she has conducted pre and postdoctoral research stays at prestigious international universities, including UNAM in Mexico and KU Leuven in Belgium.
She is the editor of the journal Borealis and the journal RESLA and regularly performs review duties for several renowned academic journals. Her interdisciplinary approach to research has allowed her to collaborate on projects that cross boundaries between pragmatics, historical semantics, and linguistic variation and change, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in her field.
