Dissemination and interpretation

The old historical building of General Studies was radically remodeled in 1999, because of the fifth centenary of the University foundation. Since then it sets itself up as one of the main models of the institution, at the heart of the city, being an important public showcase of the conscientious educative, research and cultural work that University develops and makes available to all citizens.

La Nau Cultural Centre offers a comprehensive programme of activities for the dissemination of culture, the promotion of the arts, and social awareness through temporary exhibitions, interesting stage productions at the Matilde Salvador Hall and the Cloister, which give reason of the deeply-rooted theatrical tradition of the Valencian university, as well as through concerts of its own symphony orchestra and weekly performances of chamber music in the Sapiencia Chapel, and the crowded summer Serenades in the Cloister. This scene is completed with talks, discussions, and publications of its successful Debate Forum, devoted to the formation of a much needed social consciousness, poetry readings, film commentaries, the collective display through videoconferences of international events, specialised courses, seminars and scientific conferences, and other activities that shape, with its heritage collections and museum spaces, a very wide and varied range of possibilities in the service of an ambitious cultural project, which gives meaning to the iconic university building, and complements the cultural attractions of Valencia, from the approaches of reflection, dialogue and service that characterise this academic institution since its foundation, half a millennium ago.
