His speech revolved around the topic of financial marriage rules regulation and property consequences of marriage in registered unions.

Professor Palao took part in the 20th Conference of Catalan Law in the the Costa Brava municipality Tossa del Mar, which took place between the 20th and the 21st September 2018. Thus, in the frame of this conference focused on the meaning of European regulation in matter of contracts, family and inheritance, he focused his speech on the European regulation 2016/1103 and 2016/1104 on the subject of financial marriage rules and property consequences of marriage in registered unions, which will be enforced starting next 29th January 2019. This speech addressed especially the most significant and problematic parts of these innovative instruments (which will be fully implemented in Spain, as a member state that has cooperated in its creation) and unleashed its coordination among the sectors that it regulates and with the rest of European instruments that regulate it in other areas of family and inheritance law, as well as the possible solutions and difficulties when it comes to enforcing in the European and Spanish International Private Law (since there are two regulations that regulate all its sectors.) Moreover, among other current questions of practical interest, this opportunity was used in order to highlight the significant role that plays the principle of the exercise of free will in this area (mainly in areas of international court jurisdiction and enforceable law), as well as the possibility to use non-jurisdictional mechanisms (like mediation and arbitration) in order to manage conflict that can emerge in this important and particular area of family law.
