FAQs

What teaching staff needs to undergo the assessment?

All teaching staff needs to undergo the assessment for all of their teaching activity.

According to the Internal Quality Assurance System of the faculties and schools, the teaching activity in undergraduate and Master's degrees needs to be assessed every year. Therefore, the surveys to assess the teaching activity of lecturers that have taught for at least 15 hours will be activated automatically in the Virtual Office of the Secretary.

I have only taught for 90 hours this year, because I have taught for less than 15 hours in several practical groups. Does this entail a negative assessment?

No. An annual assessment will be considered satisfactory when the total average is over 2.5. Insufficient assessment without justification will be considered unsatisfactory (article 5.4).

A five-year assessment will be considered positive if you have obtained a satisfactory assessment in at least 4 years (article 5.5).

If you obtain a sufficient assessment, you may not need to be assessed again for the rest of the five-year period. Meeting the minimum credits established in the first and second additional provisions is independent from the nature of the assessment.

You must also know that there is an exception in the regulations for undergraduate and Master's degrees. You can request for your teaching activity to be assessed in those groups in which you have taught for at least 10 hours.

Do adjunct lecturers need to be assessed?

All teaching staff must be assessed, as long as they have taught for more than 10 hours. Only those lecturers who have a five-year period of recognised experience. Moreover, this assessment is very important for adjunct lecturers, taking into account future accreditations.

Since five-year periods begin on 1 January and assessments are intended for academic years, which academic year is considered to be the first (that is, the one to be assessed)?

The first academic year of a five-year period corresponds to the academic year that ends in the same year in which the last five-year period starts to be economically recognised.

So if a five-year period begins to be recognised on 1 January 2014 (corresponding to the academic years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013), the first academic year for the new five-year period is 2013-2014.

The Regulations require a minimum of 15 hours per group and lecturer. However, there are lecturers who don't meet that minimum. Can their hours be assessed and counted as valid, since there is no alternative?

There is an exception in the regulations for undergraduate and Master's degrees. You can request to assess your teaching activity in those groups in which you have taught for at least 10 hours.

I teach 30 hours in a theory group and 8 hours in three different practical groups. Can all those hours be assessed?

In licenciaturas and diplomaturas, the teaching activity for all those hours can be assessed though a single survey (corresponding to the theory group) as long as the student can make a coherent overall judgement of the lecturer's teaching activity.

In that case, students need to be warned that they are assessing theory and practical hours, and include the records of the theory group and the three practical groups in the envelope. A total of 54 hours (30 + 8 + 8 + 8) will be computed.

In undergraduate and Master's degrees there is only a joint survey.

Within the same module, I have to practical subgroups with 8 hours each. Since together they add up to more than 15 hours, can they be assessed?

No. Because each student only receives 8 teaching hours, below the minimum of 15 hours established by the Regulations and also below the minimum of 10 hours considered for the exception (December 2012) in the same Regulations for undergraduate and Master's degrees

There are few students enrolled on one of my groups. Is the assessment valid, even though there are only 5 surveys?
The Regulations state that groups of less than 5 students will not be assessed (article 21, 2A). But there is an exception for groups of less than 10 students which says that "For purposes of that stated in the First Additional Provision, when a group has less than 10 students enrolled, assessment results will only be valid if there are at least a 50% surveys and a minimum of 3".

On the other hand, when the assessment is conducted through the Virtual Office of the Secretary, surveys will be valid if at least 3 of them were received and as long as the lecturer agrees.

I share a group with another lecturer. I teach the first part of the subject and hold an exam. Do I have to wait until the end of the academic year to be assessed?

No. Under these circumstances, once surveys have been activated, lecturers can change their active period through the Virtual Office of the Secretary to establish a more appropriate period.

I think that the period set for the assessment is not appropriate, because due to the typology of the classes we will end the module much earlier. I know I can change the dates, but is there any criteria?

Surveys can be conducted when at least a 70% hours have been taught. It is recommended to conduct the survey before the final examination. It is also important that students have enough time to access and fill the survey, at least a month.

Anyway, the new period must be validated by the Quality Unit. These requests are generally aproved, but if there is any doubt (the period is too long, the dates have already passed...) the Quality Unit will contact the person involved.

Can teaching in licenciaturas be also assessed through the Virtual Office of the Secretary?

No. Only the teaching activity in undergraduate and Master's degree can be assessed through that platform. Moreover, the surveys are different.
