“Positive Organizational Psychology (POP)”

Whereas traditional psychology focuses on disease, disability and malfunctioning, Positive Psychology focuses on well-being, human strength and optimal functioning. Following this trend, Luthans (2002, p. 179) has argued that we need positive organizational research as well, which he defined as “the study and application of positively oriented human resource strengths and psychological capacities that can be measured, developed, and effectively managed for performance improvement in today’s workplace”. This seminar is on Positive Organizational Psychology (POP). I will discuss my research program on work engagement and positive organizational behaviors (e.g., in-role performance, active learning, and job crafting). Participants will work in subgroups and learn how to design new studies in this exciting area, possibly using their own research as a starting point. They may, for example, design diary studies that capture why employees are engaged and have high levels of energy on a daily basis. Or they may consider designing an intervention study on happiness at work in which the effects of positive interventions are tested.

Date of Seminar: 13-17 September
Place: Faculty of Psychology (University of Valencia, Spain). Ergonomic Laboratory G2.
