This species, which once it occupied a large part of the Iberian mountains, it has been gradually extinguished until it is located today, as a breeding area, in the Pyrenees. However, it is possible to find rambling specimens throughout the Spanish territory. Currently, different programs to recovery species are being developed. One of them, which takes place at the Maestrazgo de Castelló, it seeks the reintroduction of the bonebreaker in the area through artificially raised chicks in situ. Although it is not fully demonstrated, there is evidence that this species could breed in the past in Valencian territory. In the Museum of the University of Valencia of Natural History there are three naturalized specimens of this species, from Sagunto and Requena at the end of the 19th century. Natural History collections not only stand out for their intrinsic scientific value, but over time they form an important Natural Heritage. |
