Lecturers:

  • Bienvenido León (University of Navarra). Journalist and Doctorate in Public Communication, he is a professor in the Faculty of Communication of the University of Navarra, where he gives lessons of Television Production and Audiovisual Scientific Dissemination. Previously, he has been news manager of Editmedia TV agency, coordinator of news reports of Tele5 and director of the production company Euroview. Since many years, he also works as a director, producer and scriptwriter of reports and documentaries for TV. His works have been awarded with many awards, such as the best documentary of the international festival of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and Cuzco (Peru). He is the author of the book El documental de divulgación científica (Barcelona, Paidós, 1999), as well as numerous scientific and informative articles about communication published in Spanish and international magazines.
  • Carolina Moreno (Universitat de València). Journalism Professor of the Universitat de València. She holds a Doctorate in Information Science by the Complutense University of Madrid. She has been a researcher of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and a member of a group of the communication and social studies in Andalusia. She is the author of El periodismo científico (Madrid, Síntesis, 2003-en prensa) and El periodismo científico y técnico: aprender a leer la información sobre salud y medio ambiente (Junta de Andalucía, 1988). She has worked as a journalist in Canal Sur RTVA, in the newspapers Sur, El Mundo and El País (the weekly supplement) and as an editor in chief of the magazine of the CSIC Fronteras de la Ciencia y la Tecnología.
  • Miquel Francés (Universitat de València). Professor of Audiovisual Communication, director of the Production and AudioVisual Content Editing Master’s Degree, and responsible of the Audiovisual Workshop of the Universitat de València. As a responsible of the Audiovisual Workshop and the former Centre of Audiovisual Productions, he has made and produced many documentaries of scientific dissemination and educative videos, such as Mediterrànea Viva, Calciners, Memòries d'una Escuela, Els Moriscs Valencians, 500 Anys d'Història de la Universitat de València, Els Cetacis del Mediterrani, Del Roig al Blau, Sota la pell del conflicte, Els gens que mengem... Among his publications, La Comunicació Audiovisual, Els documentals de naturalesa, El vocabulari de tècnic de producció audiovisual, La producción de documentales en la era digital stand out.

Objectives:

The course presents an overview of the scientific dissemination through the television documentary, one of the most productive genres in that particular field. In an introductory part, the course offers a historic perspective of the documentary genre as a way of scientific dissemination. The core of the course is dedicated to the study of the process of production of science documentaries, from the initial idea to the final assembly of the programme. The explanations will be illustrated with examples of scientific documentaries made by remarkable international production companies.
