Presentation:

The study of the landscape is fundamental to the environmental education and the comprehension of the energy and matter balance on Earth. Cinema presents a great opportunity to get to know and understand the landscape. The course pretends to use the art –the cinema- as a learning method to the basics concepts of Earth environment, and to introduce the student into climatic diversity, biogeography, soil science, and geomorphology of the Earth.

  • Syllabus:
  • Introduction. The climate system of Earth. Energy balance. Heat distribution, evaporation and precipitation of the Earth. Vegetation distribution on the Earth. General circulation of the atmosphere. Air masses and fronts. Global climates. Vegetation, water as and geomorphological processes.
  • Rainforest. Equatorial wetlands. Fitzcarraldo. The Mission. The African Queen. The Killing Fields. Aguirre, Wrath of God. Apocalypse Now.
  • The Savannah. Dry tropical area. Out of Africa. Hatari.
  • The deserts: climatic, orographic, cold currents and continental. Lawrence of Arabia. The Searchers. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The Story of the Weeping Camel. Flight of the Phoenix.
  • Meadows and Steppes. The Big Country. Dances with Wolves. The Straight Story. Fraguo. The Bridges of Madison County.
  • Temperate forests. The Bear. Doctor Zhivago. Pelle the Conqueror.
  • The tundra and taiga region. Derzu Usala.

Schedule:

The lectures will be 31 January and 1,2,7,8,9,10,14,15,16,17,21,22, 23 February 2011 from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
