Presentation 1: Research on Emotion in Organizations: A Multilevel Perspective

Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in the study of emotions in organizations.  Research, however, has been hampered by perceptions that emotions are ephemeral, and a lack of an integrated multi-level model.  In this presentation, Prof. Ashkanasy will describe how he has tacked this problem.  In particular, he will set out the theoretical basis of a five-level model of emotions in organizations.  This model was published in 2003 in the series Research in Multilevel Issues (Vol. 2, ed. by Dansereau & Yammarino, publ. by Elsevier Science), and forms the basis of a recent grant awarded by the Australian Research Council.  At the lowest level of the model is within-person variation, defined in terms of affective events theory.  Levels of the model then proceed through individual, dyadic relationship, group, and organization-wide perspectives.

Prof. Ashkanasy’s presentation will be in two parts.  In the first part, he will describe the model, including recent findings in neuroscience that underlie the experience, perception, and communication of emotion.  He will also present the results of studies recent at different levels of the model and conclude with a discussion of implications of the model for research and practice.  In the second part, he will invite the audience to engage in a conversation with him about the latest developments in emotions research and its application in organizational settings.

Presentation 2: Publishing in High Impact Journals

The old adage “publish or perish” is alive and well, on fact more so than ever before.  Moreover, academic careers nowadays depend on “impact” – the extent to which a scholar’s work is cited in the literature.  Prof. Ashkanasy is a senior and experienced journal editor, and will provide insights on the publishing process, how to prepare manuscripts for submission to the best journals, and how to review for these journals.

Prof. Ashkanasy’s presentation will again be in two parts.  In the first part, he will explain the various indices of academic impact; how they are calculated, and how this translates into “journal impact factors.”  He will then discuss how to prepare manuscripts for publication in the high impact journals – what works, and what doesn’t.

In the second part of his presentation, Prof. Ashkanasy will run a workshop on journal reviewing.  To prepare for the workshop, participants will need to select a recent manuscript published in a high profile journal in their area of research, and write a 500-word review of the article.  In the presentation, they will briefly present the paper they selected, and summarize the main points of their review
