"Emergent phenomena: Theory and Methodologies, y Macrocognition, team collaboration, and team processes"

The last two decades have witnessed a worldwide shift from work structured around individual jobs to team-based work Systems, and there are increasing pressures to enhance team processes, performance, and effectiveness. Although there are over 50 years of psychological research on team effectiveness, the literature is diffuse, findings are often confusing, and high value research targets are obscure. This seminar is designed to organize this vast literature, highlight key findings, and suggest meaningful directions for research advancement to enhance team effectiveness.

The first segment of the seminar will focus on defining team effectiveness, reviewing classic models of it, and establishing critical conceptual considerations (i.e., levels of analysis issues) that underlie my approach to understanding it. The second segment of the seminar will focus attention on cognitive, motivational-affective, and behavioural team processes that enable team members to combine their resources to resolve team task demands and, in so doing, achieve effectiveness. Then, having established critical team processes that enable team effectiveness, the last segment of the seminar will identify interventions or levels that can shape or align team processes and, thus, provide applications for improving team effectiveness. Topics will be illustrated with research findings and current research efforts. Targets for future research will be addressed throughout the seminar.

Date of Seminar: 2-15 July 2012

Place: M400 (4º)Faculty of Psychology (University of Valencia, Spain).
