1. Goals and Competencies

The overall goal of this module is to develop students’ knowledge and competencies in employee recruitment, selection, and assessment systems. The module will also have a highlighted component of practical diagnosis and intervention skills (via an assessment center workshop) as integral to this skill development. Key competencies and KSAOs are as follows:

    • To acquaint students with state-of-the-science research findings in employee recruitment, selection, and assessment;
    • To facilitate students’ knowledge of these key findings as the basis for any implemented recruitment and selection system;
    • To understand key concepts, including validity, reliability, adverse impact, and applicant reactions;
    • To develop basic skills of observing and assessing candidates, diagnosing their strengths and weaknesses, and formulating feedback.

2. Overview of the Module

This module will cover key theories, research findings, current practices, and skills in employee recruitment, selection and assessment procedures.

  • In the recruitment area, traditional recruitment practices (job ads) as well as more recent approaches (employer branding) will be dealt with.
  • In the selection and assessment domain, cognitive ability testing, personality inventories, interviews situational judgment tests, assessment centers, work samples will be covered. Special attention will be also placed to recent developments in these selection and assessment procedures (e.g., unproctored Internet testing).

Contact sessions will involve (a) a lecture and (b) a workshop. The lecture will cover the key knowledge areas. In the workshop, students will be given the opportunity to observe and evaluate an assessment center candidate. In both parts of this module, students will be encouraged to take a highly participative role to maximize their learning of the key KSAOs identified above.

3. Readings and Other Preparatory Materials
