"Networks in organizations and knowledge management"

In work and organizational psychology, informal (social) networks have for a long time mainly been discussed in the context of micro-politics and/or social influence in organizations. However, since a little more than a decade, the notion of social networks has also been looked upon in relation to how organizations leverage experience and knowledge of employees.
The seminar will introduce into crucial conceptual foundations of knowledge management from the point of view of organizational psychology and then focus on the psychological implications of network-like collaboration/communication.
From the methodological point of view we will discuss (cognitive) social network analysis and link this to the notion of transactive memory systems in organizations. Network positions (broker, gate keeper, hubs, outliers, etc.) will be evaluated in relation to their impact on individuals, and network structures will be reflected with respect to their impact on, e.g. organizational effectiveness and cohesion. Reflections on the increasing use of social media in organizations will highlight socio-technical aspects of the issues at stake.  Our conceptual considerations will be exemplified by presenting empirical research on the topic.
