About this book

The book leads the reader step by step through the whole assessment procedure, thus enabling him to interpret the raw data measured in space to establish the physical and biological landsurface state variables needed for climatological, hydrological and ecological process studies. It integrates the work of many scientists who were involved in a number of projects of the European Commission. Examples are given which demonstrate the application of the obtained information in the Mediterranean area. Specific emphasis is laid on the calibration and validation of the extracted quantities by comparing them with the results of field experiments. Besides presenting research results, the book will also be of interest to newcomers in the field and satellite data users needing to understand in depth how such information is generated and how it can be put to use. In eight appendices useful background information and latest results are reported.

Written for:

Researchers, scientists, libraries, institutes, graduate students (Geography, Climatology, Ecology, Env. Sciences, Geophysics, Geodesy, Landscape Planning)

About this book

This textbook is written for meteorology majors who require an initial introduction to the physical properties of the atmosphere and to the essential principles and real-world applications of atmospheric thermodynamics. These topics are supplemented by a sampling of techniques and technologies related to atmospheric measurements and observations. A unique tutorial, included as an appendix, teaches students how to attack physical problems symbolically, deferring numerical calculations until the final step in the solution. The authors overall objectives include not only covering the traditional core subject matter of an undergraduate thermodynamics course but also facilitating students transition from a purely abstract understanding of calculus and physics concepts to the confident application of both to the science of meteorology.

The affordability of textbooks has become a growing concern for students and, by extension, the instructors who assign the textbooks. For this reason, Sundog Publishing offers customers the option of purchasing its books directly from the source at the same wholesale price paid by university bookstores.

About the author

Grant W. Petty is a professor in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches atmospheric physics, atmospheric radiation and remote sensing to undergraduate and graduate students. A former shipboard and aviation weather observer in the U.S. Navy and a private pilot, he brings a uniquely practical perspective to the subject of this book. He is also the author of A First Course in Atmospheric Radiation.

Valencia & Alacant Anchor Stations

VAS_AAS02.gif

What is an ANCHOR STATION? (from Professor H.-J. Bolle)/

Anchor Stations are instrumented sites to measure in representative areas quantities which are needed to

run
calibrate
validate

models and algorithms e.g. such as those needed to quantitatively evaluate satellite data and convert them into geophysical information.

The stations must be instrumented with equipment for long time measurements of basic quantities (meteorological and hydrological background data) and, in addition, for quantities that are not readily assessed at operational meteorological and hydrological stations.

Anchor Stations, furthermore, must offer the infrastructure to undertake more refined measurements for shorter intensive observation periods in the surrounding of the station.

In addition to background quantities (temperature, moisture, pressure), they should also be measured:

fluxes (surface albedo, the four components of net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible and latent heat flux, carbon fluxes, water fluxes in the soil),
Bowen ratio
spectral atmospheric optical depth
atmospheric water vapour
aerosol parameters
ground water level
soil moisture
vegetation parameters (type, height or z0, resistances, biomass, NPP, LAI)

Not all Anchor Stations need to measure all parameters permanently

Rationale/

Mesoscale models
can in principle be operated with little instantaneous input from ground observations if topography and synoptic scale flow are known. Whether they produce the correct interactions with the surface (momentum, energy and mass fluxes) must be checked at least occasionally by direct measurements

Hydrological models
The same is true. In their case, it has to be validated whether they produce the correct soil moisture and run-off

Satellite data
are evaluated with complicated algorithms that tie the measured radiances to surface properties. These algorithms have to be tested against direct measurements and satellite instruments have to be re-calibrated

ISLSCP.gif
(From F. Becker, H.-J. Bolle and P.R. Rowntree, 1988, The International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project)

Climate models
Not only need in addition to meteorological data carbon dioxide and other trace gas fluxes, they also need, according to the latest results, aerosol data. Anchor Stations should therefore also be equipped with instrumentation for spectral optical depth measurements or other kind of equipment that provides information about aerosol concentrations and types. The state of vegetation can, to some degree, be estimated from satellite observations. The conclusions from such kind of measurements may, however, be misleading if no ground truth is available

Desirable measurements at Anchor Stations/

Continuously:
Atmospheric transmittance (spectral)
Net radiation flux; preferable all four radiation fluxes plus in addition independently the net flux
Bowen ratio (including the measurements of air temperature and humidity at two levels)
Soil heat fluxes and temperatures at least at four levels
Precipitation
Soil moisture at three levels: near surface, intermediate, root layer
Effective radiation temperature of the surface
Ground water (piezometric) level

Occasionally (especially under extreme situations):
Sensible and latent heat fluxes separately by advanced methods (e.g. eddy correlation)
Vegetation parameters such as leaf area index (LAI), fractional coverage, biomass area density, stem flow, stomata resistance, vegetation height, vegetation structure, leaf orientation & size
Land use at and around the station

From time to time at longer intervals:
Soil quality
Radiometric characteristics (e.g. reflectance function)

At the central data bank the following derived quantities have to be computed from the measured values:

Wavelength dependent optical depth and vertical distribution of water vapour mass as needed for the correction of satellite data. The goal must be to derive a climatology of aerosol optical properties for the region. If reliable algorithms become available to compute atmospheric corrections from measurements made in space, this network serves the validation of these algorithms and the quality control of atmospheric corrections. This task can be supported by measurements made in the areas of the anchor stations by aircraft in order to obtain a better areal coverage.

Daily and monthly values of all flux components (radiation, sensible heat, latent heat, soil heat flux respectively heat storage in the soil).

Soil moisture as the difference between precipitation, latent heat flux, and storage.

Ratio of directional reflectance to albedo (according to models parametrized with respect to the measured quantities that are still to be developed).

Surface conductance.

How Representative are the Alacant and the Valencia Anchor Stations Measurements of their Respective Surrounding Meteorology?

The application of the Valencia and the Alacant Anchor Stations to validation activities of low spatial resolution Earth Observation remote sensing missions make it necessary to study the representativity and significance of the actual meteorological stations measurements with respect to the area they represent.

Meteorological simulations carried out with The Atmospheric Pollution Model (TAPM) (Hurley, 2005) carried out for the whole year of 2004 with the temporal resolution of one hour. The spatial resolution is 1 km, covering a total area of 75 x 75 km2. The grid is chosen such that the Anchor Station is placed in the central point, that is, the coordinate (38, 38).

The correlation between the simulated time series for every grid point and the corresponding Anchor Station simulated values is established by means of the Pearsons correlation coefficient. The following figures show the correlation maps obtained for the parameters analysed, namely, temperature, relative humidity, u and v wind components, and precipitation.

RepresentativityAAS.gif
Correlation maps centered at the Alacant Anchor Station relative to the following meteorological parameters: a) temperature, b) relative humidity, c) u wind component, d) v wind component, e) precipitation

RepresentativityVAS.gif
Correlation maps centered at the Valencia Anchor Station relative to the following meteorological parameters: a) temperature, b) relative humidity, c) u wind component, d) v wind component, e) precipitation

A limit has been established in the correlation coefficients for each of the parameters and the zone of influence of the whole station has been taken as the intersection of the zones obtained for each of the parameters. Instead of using five correlation coefficients one for each parameter- a specific percentile value, namely, 75, 85 95, has been chosen as limiting value for each of the correlation coefficients, thus defining different approximations degrees. The values of the limiting correlation coefficients relative to each meteorological parameter and for each proposed percentile are given in the following Table 1 for both Anchor Stations.

Limiting correlation coefficients for every parameter (temperature, relative humidity, u wind component, v wind component, precipitation) and percentile, respectively for the Valencia and the Alacant Anchor Stations TablePercentiles.gif

The graphical representation of the intersection of the areas obtained for each meteorological parameter is given in the followinf figure, where the red area represents the intersection of the zones obtained for each parameter taking as limiting R values those obtained for percentile 95; the yellow area for percentile 85 and the white area for percentile 75. The black area shows lower correlation values.

Proposal for a Water Cycle Observatory: The VALENCIA and the ALACANT ANCHOR STATIONS, Meteorological Reference Stations for Remote Sensing Data and Products

The Valencia Anchor Station is showing its capabilities and conditions as a reference validation site in the framework of low spatial resolution remote sensing missions such as CERES, GERB and SMOS. The Alacant Anchor Station is a reference site in studies on the interactions between desertification and climate. Both stations separated a distance of about 150 km are actually twin stations, their representative areas have similar land use and soil types, but they are located in two different climatic zones: average annual precipitation is about 450 mm in the Valencia Anchor Station area and about 250 mm in the Alacant Anchor Station one. The parallelism between both Anchor Stations and the fact that one of them is under water-stressing conditions make it appropriate to define a Water Cycle Observatory where to study and compare meteorological parameters and surface fluxes of radiation, energy and water.

SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign Activities at the Valencia Anchor Station

SMOS_Logo.gif

Within the TV programme Medi Ambient of the Valencia Radio Television Network this Campaign was magnificently shown as The Eyes of Science on 11th and 13th December, 2008.

Medi Ambient is a TV programme specialized on information on environmental matters in the Valencia Autonomous Community.

Successful dress rehearsal for SMOS validation As ESA looks forward to the launch of its SMOS Earth Explorer next year, the extensive SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign took place over Germany, Spain and the Mediterranean Sea during last April, 2008. The campaign rehearsed the complex procedures involved in validating the mission's data data crucial for a better understanding of the Earth's water cycle.

More than 100 people in total, scientists and students from the University of Valencia, Spain, took soil-moisture gravimetric samples and probe readings from the SMOS control area of the Valencia Anchor Station, covering an area of 100 km2 and including different types of vegetation. The measuring activities from the aircraft and on the ground were carried out following periods of a significant rainfall event so that the so-called drying period of the soil could be nicely represented in the data.

Purpose

The general purpose of the SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign is to repeat the Commissioning Phase execution with all centres, all tools, all participants, all structures, all data available, assuming all tools and structures are ready and trying to produce as close as possible the post-launch conditions. The aim is to test the readiness, the ensemble coordination and the speed of operations, and to avoid as far as possible any unexpected deficiencies of the plan and procedure during the real Commissioning Phase campaigns (Bouzinac et al., 2008). A specific added-value objective of the Valencia Anchor Station Team is to validate the ground sampling strategy defined for this campaign (10 x 10 km2) by comparing the ground area-estimated products with the aircraft area-integrated measurements in order to be able to extend the methodology to the larger SMOS footprint representative area (125 x 125 km2). The scientific framework in which context these objectives will be studied is monitoring of soil drying after a significant rainfall event takes place in the study area.

Activities

Ground Measurements during aircraft operations

Objectives: (i) To measure soil moisture content for the whole 10 x 10 km2 under saturation conditions, i. e., after a significant rain event, and during the soil drying period, i.e., 24, 48 h, 5-7 days, 10-15 days, after precipitation
(ii) To measure SM of each significant and representative hydro-physiological unit:
Compare different SM measurements within each unit
Compare different SM measurements in polygones within each
Compare SM measurements of similar units
Compare SM measurements of different units
(iii) Establish relationships to unify / fragment units or re-assign polygons in different units
(iv) Provide the approximate average for each unit and for all the units in total within the 10 x 10 km2
(v) Compare SM from the units to that of the total area
(vi) Study the representativity of the automatic SM stations in the whole 10 x 10 km2 area, using the large number of measurements for eachy day of the campaign
(vii) Establish a quick and efficacious methodology to estmate SM of a large area out of a few measurements, as preparation for Cal/Val
(viii) Compare SM under humid and dry conditions; establish the spatial and temporal dynamics of SM

The campaign at the Valencia Anchor Station Site will begin on 19th April. The first possible campaign flight should be performed before sunrise on 20th April, independently of weather conditions, except if it is actually raining.

SM Measurements

Volumetric/Gravimetric soil samples Volumetric probe measurements (Theta Probe)

In each sampling plot, volumetric SM data will be obtained by means of capacitance probes (Delta-T Theta probes) calibrated according to the soil textures obtained in each case and, in parallel, soil samples will be obtained in cylinders of known volumen where volumetric soil moisture will be measured, thus obtaining soil bulk density. From that, soil porosity will be estimated because this parameter is responsible of the soil water retention capacity.

The percent of water in volume obtained will be used as ground truth with respect to the SM values obtained with the capacitance probes.

The ground measurements will consist of 20 teams distributed throughout the entire area, (4 teams for the detailed diagonal flight, 4 teams for the harder soil shrub area (left-hand side of the image, teams 5, 6, 7, 8), and 3 teams for the rest of each flight line remaining. Depending on the soil properties and hardiness each group will take a large number of cylinder volumetric samples and an average of 1000 volumetric probe measurements every flight day.

From our detailed vegetation map (generated at 1:2000 scale), vegetation over the 10 x 10 km2 area shows a scarce diversity of vegetation species. Within the area, the major vegetation uses are vineyard, almond- and olive-trees, coniferous forests, matorral shrubs (Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis, Quercus coccifera, Genista scorpius, Ulex parviflorus, Ramnus licioides, Stipa tenacissima, Juniperus communis), and very very scarce areas of cereals (Zea mays and Avena sativa).

Vegetation parameter sampling is not needed to be too intensive. However, accurate estimation of vegetation stage should be achieved through simple measurements over well chosen areas:
 Vegetation height
Phenologic stage (number of leaves in vineyards/plant, etc) in some fields
Digital photographs giving general information on the phenology (in orchards)
LAI measurements in shrubs and matorral areas
Alometric parameter sampling in tree areas to relate plant dimensions to vegetation characteristics which are required as inputs for the retrieval models
 Vegetation water content sampling

SVRC_LAI_FVCmaps.gif

For each of the dominant vegetation types, the sampling to be performed will consist of: branches and leaves of almond, olive, Holm Oak and pine trees, and complete individuals of shrubs. In these samples we will measure all the dimensional parameters and laboratory analysis to estimate biomass.

Soil texture

Soil samples on measured plots will be taken before the campaign to begin laboratory analysis and probe texture calibrations. Each team will measure a statistically significant amount of point measurements in plots distributed throughout the selected area. Of these plots, soil bulk density, percentage of organic material, texture and probe calibration analysis will be determined.

Airborne Operations during the SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign (Tauriainen, 2008)

The flight measurements will be performed using the TKK Short Skyvan research aircraft. The payload for the SMOS Validation Rehearsal campaign will consist of the following instruments:
L-band radiometer EMIRAD provided by the Technical University of Denmark (TUD)
HUT-2D L-band imaging interferometric radiometer provided by TKK
PARIS GPS reflectrometry system provided by IEEC
IR sensor provided by the Finnish Institute of Maritime Research (FIMR)
a low resolution digital video camera

Flight measurements over the VAS site should be followed by sea water measurements for instrument calibration. Therefore the flight should be extended before landing at the Valencia airport to cover a short track over the Mediterranean. The Valencia buoy from the Spanish Port System (Puertos del Estado) could be of interest (tbc)

Modelling

(i) At CESBIO, modelling work is currently carried out to simulate passive microwave brightness temperatures. Surfex, a SVAT (Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer) model from Mto France, is used to characterize the surface according to ground and meteorological data from the Valencia Anchor Station area. Outputs from this surface modelling are used in the L-MEB (L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere, Wigneron et al., 2007) model to simulate the surface emission (brightness temperatures) at L-band. These simulations, spatialized at the SMOS pixel, will be compared in a further step with the SMOS measurements during the Commissioning Phase.

(ii) HIRLAM is currently being applied to the area. Soil Moisture fields will be extracted from HIRLAM analyses during the SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign and compared to the Soil Moisture network, in collaboration with the Spanish AEMet. As a trial, the picture below shows the Soil Moisture field obtained from the output from HIRLAM for 14/07/05, at 00Z. All the HIRLAM analyses will be available for the SMOS Validation Rehearsal Campaign.

Improvement of Angular Dependence Models

Contract ESTEC-ESA (Dec. 2003 Dec. 2005)
  • Partners:

University of Valencia (Coordination Institution)
Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique du CNRS (France)
Meteorological Service of Canada
Technische Universitat Dresden (Germany)

  • P.I.: E. Lopez-Baeza (Coordinator)
  • ESA Scientific Coordinator: Dr Marc Bouvet
  • Objectives of the Study Project

1) to develop improved ADMs from instantaneous flux retrieval, specially for broad-band radiometers with a footprint in the order of around 10km and multi-view capability and
2) to evaluate the impact of three-dimensional radiative effects on the accuracy of the derived TOA fluxes

  • Overall structure of the Study Plan

BBR_ADM_01WorkStructure.gif

The work was planned by a close interaction between experimental and theoretical results.

The first task was devoted to the construction of a database from satellite data. The best current source has been the instrument CERES/Terra with its along-track capabilities, once a true along-track (trueAT) scan was implemented attempting to rectify the original configuration which did not take into account the Earth rotation, causing the RAA to be kept constant at 90 degrees. As a consequence of that, there was originally a several footprints distance between a forward and backward sweep even for relatively small (<60 degrees) VZAs. The Study Team proposed the CERES Science Team to introduce a variable trueAT angle as a function of a satellite groundtrack latitude, seeking to minimize the width of an AT swath within VZAs of less than 60 degrees. This correction is now operational in the CERES system.

BBR_ADM_02TrueAT.gif

The second task defined the scenes upon which the angular models were constructed. The total number of simulated scenes is larger than 200.000, building up significant ensembles with a robust statistical analysis, and including realistic 3D effects. This figure is really huge although it is a minimum number to be able to develop ADMs at a global scale, as EarthCARE will do. The scene definition includes realistic atmospheric situations, considering their spatial and temporal variability as well, defined according to latitude and geometrical observation conditions for a sunsynchronous EarthCARE orbit with Equator crossing time between 13:30 and 14:00 LST on a descending node.
