CIAICO/2023/131
This project will develop a fermentative alternative for the joint management of municipal solid waste (MSW) and agro-industrial waste. The raw materials selected for use have been chosen considering their high availability in the Valencian Community and the specific management challenges they present. This research focuses on the development of low-cost and/or low-energy-intensity processes for the production of solvents (butanol, acetone, isopropanol, 1,3-propanediol) and carboxylic acids (lactic acid and succinic acid). Tailored solutions will be developed through the optimisation and integration of each step of the process: pre-treatment, saccharification, fermentation, and on-site recovery for the joint valorisation of MSW and lignocellulosic waste (rice straw, tomato waste, and onion waste).
