Project TECNOGEN: Gender Technologies in Spanish Audiovisual Culture of the New Millennium
The main objective of this project is to examine women’s audiovisual production, with particular attention to the second decade of the 21st century. It will analyse the impact of intersectional feminism on cultural production processes within the Spanish audiovisual landscape of the new millennium, considering both fiction and non-fiction works created by women that aim to promote inclusive discourses and to develop new genres and representations free from stereotypes. The project also seeks to highlight films, television series, and web-based productions across diverse digital platforms directed by women, a group historically marginalised within the cultural industries.
Our working hypothesis is that recent feminist and LGTBIQ+ movements have significantly shaped female audiovisual production, fostering changes and transformations in the cultural imagination and giving rise to a new gender technology. We argue that these filmic and serial texts contribute to reshaping the contemporary socio-sexual imaginary by making visible social groups that have traditionally been marginalised and by addressing issues generally absent from conventional narratives. Such issues include new approaches to violence against women, gender and sexual diversity, bodily and functional diversity, cultural difference, as well as gender and ageism.
Finally, the project seeks to explore the innovative dimensions of these works from formal, narrative, and spectatorial perspectives, with the aim of foregrounding the creativity of women directors and their commitment to transforming cultural imaginaries of gender.
