In November 2015, our collaborator and co-director of European Projects, Paula Iranzo (Legal Services of the General Foundation of the University of Valencia) presents the Escena Erasmus Project as an exemplary case of the positive practice of non-formal and intercultural education in the Mediterranean in the XVI Annual Assembly of the Anna Lindh Network.
In February 2016 the first play of the year premieres in the Matilde Salvador Theatre of the University of Valencia, called “Schengenland or the National Tourism (EU)” with texts by Laura Sanchis, Antonia Montaner, Carmen Valera, Francisco Sanguino and Robert March, under the dramaturgical coordination of Daniel Tormo and directed by Josep Valero and María José Soler.
This play is a work that continues on the road started last year with “Europe, Cabaret of Disenchantment” that aspires to establish a dialogue with today’s Valencian authors in an intent to ponder over Europe through the young European participants’ eyes. A brief yet intense trip through numerous actual problems of this Europe that is getting nowhere.
In May 2016 “The Circus of the Border” is presented in La Nau of the University of Valencia, a play directed by Anna Marí and María José Soler, written by Manuel Molins, Maribel Bayona, Jacobo Pallarés, Guada Sáez, Mertxe Aguilar, Daniel Tormo and Anna Marí. The production, starring twelve students from Spain, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Estonia, United Kingdom, Italy and Chile, toured 21 towns of the Valencian Community and travelled more than 1.800 kilometres. There were over 5.300 people in total in the audience.
In July 18th 2016, the “Tree of Europe” was planted in the Bolot fountain of Macastre (la Hoya de Buñol). A tree, which, in the words of the directors of Escena Erasmus, “wants to turn into a symbol of hope and which will also bear witness to this proposal by Macastre and Escena Erasmus, so that the European Project grows roots and flourishes through the values defended by the Programme “Little Europes: a Europe for its citizens, defending its land”.
In the sixth version of Escena Erasmus, the European Project underwent important changes in its structure of work and production of shows. Since Escena Erasmus was born, the project has been based in the ideas of integration and promotion of professional Valencian scenic arts. For this reason, the direction of the project agreed to collaborate with the foundation ‘AUTOR’ of the general society of Authors and Editors (SGAE) in order to perform the scenes written through ‘Urgent Theatre’ by the madrileño author Juan Cavestany at the end of November 2014. Many authors participated, representing the Valencian outlook. In January 2015 the show ‘scenes of urgency’ was performed, written by a team of the course in ‘Salon de Actos’ of the SGAE in Valencia.
In February 2015, the first show was presented in the Sala Matilde Salvador del Cultural Centre of La Nau of the University of Valencia. It was titled ‘URGENCY: Materials for a European show’ and it contained short unpublished scenes by the authors: Guadalupe Sáez, Xavier Puchades, Daniel Tormo, Maribel Bayona, Robert March, Carmen Valera, Eugenia Sancho, Antonia Montaner, Ana Albaladejo, Lucía Sáez, Rafa Segura and two short texts of radio-theatre by Juan Cavestany.
During this year the third edition of ‘The Small Europes,’ took place. Developed by Escena Erasmus and the Cultural Area of the Council of Valencia with a strong participation of the Vice rector of Projection and Territorial Participation of the University of Valencia through the program; The University and Society. Their involvement meant that we could take our shows to theatres in bigger cities within the region of Valencia such as Ontinyent and Llíria or L’Eliana.
The show which was produced during this edition of ‘The Small Europes’ was ‘Europe, Cabaret of Disenchantment’ an extraordinary call for hope from the youth, convinced that it is possible to forge a better future, although Europe today is a scene of disenchantment. The project presented a furious entertainment of a Cabaret in a theme dominated by desperation, in a European Union of democrats and bureaucrats which have shaken the foundations of a peaceful coexistence in the name of austerity. The show was written for the occasion by a number of Valencia playwrights thanks to a meeting between the students and the writers. The show was made up of the scenes “Master of ceremonies” by Maribel Bay ‘I am Europe”, the musical number by Eugenia Sancho collaborating with Julio Montalvo; “Amply prepared” by Pasqual Alapont; “An ideal World” by Javier Sahuquillo y “The barter” by Josep Lluís Sirera, whilst everything was under the direction of the playwright Daniel Tormo.
With this show we carried out a tour of two weeks travelling the province of Valencia, visiting Gátova, Alcublas, La Eliana, Ontinyent, Llíria, Valencia and Montesa. It ended up being viewed by more than two thousand four hundred people of the general public.
Also, within this year the foundations were laid to draw a strong European strategy to consolidate the Escena Erasmus network and to interact between the different headquarters of the project.
Finally, in the month of March the conference ‘The Function of Critical Theatre in Our Days’ was organised. Contributions from the Italian outlook where given by the professor of the University of Padova and theatre critic of the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Caterina Barone. Additionally, nearly all of the theatre critics active in the Valencia print were present for the conference.
During this year, many of the alumni of Escena Erasmus also participated in the artistic project ‘Outer Seed Shadow’ of the artist Juanli Carrión, an installation which was exhibited in the cloister of the cultural centre La Nau of The University of Valencia.
During 2013-2014, Escena Erasmus celebrated their fifth anniversary and on the 4th and 5th of April, all of the alumni – from twenty-one different countries – held a reunion.
During this commemoration there was a reading of the declaration of the Valencia Escena Erasmus 2014 ‘Something is rotten in Europe’ a phrase extracted from Hamlet by the students who, through theatre, intended to capture the attention of the Government, Political Powers and citizens of Europe by demanding the right for a future full of knowledge, justice and freedom for Europe within its cultural diversity and its united politics.
As is tradition, the show ‘The firefighter of Bucarest’ was produced, which paid homage to Romanian literature from the twentieth century and which was a critical and social reflection about the relation between Eastern European countries and those which are supposedly the ‘first economies’ of the continent.
This year we also celebrated the second version of the program ‘The little Europes’, which put Escena Erasmus in line for creating the show ‘After Europe’ an unpublished text written specifically for the occasion by the Valencian author Javier Sahuquillo and directed by Joseph Valero. It intended to create a before and after way of treating the different reflections of Europe which we always try to exhibit through our performances. With this production we visited the Valencian towns of Sellent, Titaguas, Albalat dels Tarongers, Gestalgar, Faura, Sumacàrcer, Castielfabib y Cofrentes.
Continuing with the social involvement of Escena Erasmus in projects raising the awareness of the city, in December 2013 we co-organised, alongside the Delegation of the Community of Valencia, ACNUR (UNHCR) the day ‘a river of music and poetry for ACNUR, emergency in Syria, help those to refine their roots in their lives’ in the riverbed of the Turia within the city.
In November 2013 we celebrated the second show of the year with ‘New routes of theatrical creation, of the improvisation and scenic creation.’ which was headed by the actor Carles Montoliu. In April 2014 the team of directors participated in the Days of Theatre and Education organised for the Xarxa Alcover in Sant Julià de Lòria (Andorra).
During the month of May in 2014, the new headquarters of Escena Erasmus were created in the city of Cagliari in the Italian Island of Cerdeña. Scena Erasmus Cagliari was promoted by Scuola de Arte Drammatica di Cagliari i Akroama. On the 4th of June 2014 the alumni and actors of Escena Erasmus participated in the inaugural day of the EMAC 2014, which was the forty-third congress of the European Marketing Academy, celebrated in the Auditorium of the faculty of Medicine.
In its fourth year Escena Erasmus began with a new theatre, culture and rural tourism program: ‘Las Europas Menudes- Las Pequeñas Europas’ in collaboration with the Cultural Area of the Council of Valencia, the vice-rectors of Culture and Equality and International Relations and Co-operation of the Univeristy of Valencia. It also had the support of the Vice-rector of Participation and Territorial Projection. Within this new program, the new show; ‘The Passengers, (A midsummer’s night dream)’ written by Anna Marí and Daniel Tormo and directed by Panchi Vivò, travelled to eight villages within the province of Valencia (Petrés, Otos, Carrícola, Alfara de la Baronia, Aras de los Olmos, Sot de Chera, Sellent y Benigànim) and participated in the Festival of the Summer at the University of Gandia. This tour had an audience of more than 2,300 people. The first show was performed in the Claustro of the cultural centre ‘La Nau’ , it had audience of more than 600 people, and it was transmitted on the university livestream, on the channel MediaUni.
As for the course of Escena Erasmus, the auditions had more than two hundred applicants representing more than nineteen countries within Europe and six in South America. Once the selection ended, twenty-three students were selected, representing fourteen European countries. During the academic year, Escena Erasmus carried out the show ‘Y cambiamos de vida’ (And we change the life,) with Grecian texts and songs as well as the show ‘Una Europa de las personas y la cultura’ (A Europe of people and culture,) which was presented at the ‘Campus of excellence VLC, in the faculty of philology in February 2013.
In 2013 the European network of Escena Erasmus began to grow and expand, firstly in Marburg, Germany and then in Padua, Italy. The bonds strengthened with FGUV (The University of Valencia funding program) and the European Documentation Centre with which preliminary studies are being carried out for the presentation of the Erasmus Scene Network to the new European Union aid programs.
It must also be emphasised that in July 2013 the first meeting between Escena Erasmus and the team of directors at ENCATC (European Network of Cultural Administration Training) allowed us to present our project in Antwerp on the 7th November for all of the partners of this important network of cultural management.
Finally, Escena Erasmus continued the social activities with the objective of involving the European Erasmus students in the social and cultural life of the Valencian Country. The 21st May the students of Escena Erasmus led the ‘World day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development’ in the room of the ‘Muralla del Colegio Mayor Rector Peset’ in the University of Valencia with a large audience. On the 20th June musicians of Escena Erasmus participated in ‘Musicians for equality’ in the Benimaclet-Mestalla district. On the 16th October 2013 Escena Erasmus collaborated with the united marathon for the red cross in the ‘Sala de Russafa’ in Valencia.
This year an old group of alumni from Escena Erasmus created the company Rocambolesc Teatre which centres around the exploration of social theatre and the development of dramatic activities in unconventional spaces.
The project Escena Erasmus, in its third year, committed to being present in Valencian society and promoting the creative and supportive potential of the Erasmus community in parts of our territory.
We stared the year with the show ‘Street’ from Harold Pintor’s magazine sketches, which was a choral mix of audio-visuals and love songs.
We continued in May with a free representation of ‘Europe’ by David Greig, which on this occasion was named ‘Frontera.’ This was impressive show that reflected on borders still closed within the European Union which was living with its back to post-war torn Yugoslavia.
Once again, consecutively for three years, we won the competition ‘Las Huellas de la Barraca’ with the project ‘Lorca, Calderón y los Estudiantes de Babel’ which was directed by the director and professor Antoni Tordera and visited more than forty towns within eight regions within Spain.
Within this tour we collaborated with the Cultural Action Government of Spain and created the ‘I Festival de Dins’ in the central regions of Valencia, with the support of the Diputació de València. The festival would become the program ‘The Little Europes’ the following year onwards.
Not only did we perform the courses shows, but also Escena Erasmus was the protagonist of the ‘Solidarity Marathon of Poetry’ which was organised by the association Desde La Otra Orilla, for the benefit of ASPANION in April 2012.
In June 2012 Escena Erasmus participated in the day ‘Youth, employment and Training in the European Union’ which was organised in the European Parliament in UPV.
In its second year, the Escena Erasmus project won the National Charlemagne Youth Prize and won third position in the European Charlemagne Youth Prize for promoting culture and Europeanism between the youths of Europe. Escena Erasmus had now become the first Spanish project to win such a prestigious prize. This prize meant that those within Escena Erasmus could perform to the European Parliament.
During the academic year 2010-2011 there were two shows dedicated to French modern dramas. In the first semester the show ‘Oh la là!’ A tragic comedy from the twentieth century, from two French texts (Jean Tardieu, Ionesco, J. C. Grumberg, M. Simonot, L.C. Sirjacq) with songs from Brel, Piaf, Brassens etc. In the second semester we explored the contemporary French panorama through the show ‘De chalets y familias’; from texts of Natacha de Pontcharra, Louise Doutreligne, Enzo Cormann o Noëlle Renaude, belonging to new and current dramas which revolutionised the relation of the texts to the performance and tested the conventions, the rules and the forms of theatrical scenes.
For the second year in a row, Escena Erasmus won the competition ‘Acción Cultural Española Las Huellas de La Barraca’ or “Cultural Action – The treads of the barracks.’ This allowed the financing, producing and realising of the show ‘El maravilloso retablo de las maravillas europeas’ to visit thirty eight cities and theatre festivals meaning that the name and prestige of our University was projected across Spain.
Furthermore, during ‘las Fallas’ 2011, (The annual fire festival in Valencia, which is famous throughout all of Spain) Escena Erasmus collaborated with the Falla Na Jordana and performed a theatrical scene within the monument. This performance was titled ‘Welcome to Hell’ and ran five times a day, staged within the monument, with the lighting by Xarxa Theatre. During this show, there was an audience of more than ten thousand during the week of festivities.
In May 2011, due to the group’s own initiative they performed a showing on the street of Europrisión which had had a huge success in the Festival of Street Arts within Elche.
The idea of Escena Erasmus was born from conversations between the members of CRIT Theatre Company and the professor Antoni Tordera of the University of Valencia.
In the last few years, the University of Valencia has been named as the second academic institution in Spain with the most exchange students in Spain. We thought our university should continue to have creative activities to enrich the experience of a year abroad.
After a few meetings with department coordinators, it was confirmed that there was a strong demand for cultural activities from the Erasmus students, and in particular, theatrical activities. The University does not have a “proper” theatre studies and the workshops organised by ‘Aula de Teatro’ are already full by October. Because of this, we came to the conclusion that it was an opportunity to create something which would allow theatre within the Erasmus scene in the University, with the possibility of showcasing of the performances. It ended up turning into one of the symbols of cultural interchange within Valencia promoted by the University of Valencia.
Nowadays, when we talk about a European education space, we should also find in it the opportunity to move towards a united Europe through the increase in knowledge gained from experience in education. These experiences should accompany the creation of any superior education.
It was therefore considered the perfect opportunity to create a network of European Universities which could form an interchange of theatrical experiences, fundamentally formed by Erasmus students. This is Europe: actors of various countries representing a text in a language which isn’t their own and presenting it in front of the European public.
We think that the University of Valencia was the best candidate to be the European headquarters, as it is already highly multicultural, and this project serves to improve the image we already have of international excellence of this institution.
During the first weeks of life of this project, a plan was drawn to organise the steps of each Escena Erasmus course. It was decided to have two shows every year, one in each academic semester whilst working towards a grand ‘espectáculo’ at the end of the year that could allow the company to conduct an autonomous, national and European tour.
The final show of every semester aims to put all the skills learnt into practice while giving the students the opportunity to understand and practice theatre in small productions. In addition, the students gain the basic notions of theatre in order to produce a show (the idea of the show, directing, scenography, costumes, audio and lights, production, publicity etc).
Since the beginning of this project it was decided that the final show of every workshop must maintain the European spirit of Escena Erasmus and therefore European dramatic literature is essential and has been explored thoroughly. This year we chose German drama from the beginning of the twentieth century, from the Authors of Karl Valentin and Bertolt Brecht. From them we produced the shows ‘Karl Cabaret’ and ‘Bar Brecht’ which were shown in the Muntaner Auditorium of the Colegio Mayor ‘Luis Vives’ of the University of Valencia.
The Escena Erasmus show ‘The Crazy Ship’ was selected in the competition ‘Las Huellas de la Barraca 2010’ out of over one hundred projects presented by Universities and Drama Colleges of Spain and South America. The SECC (The State Society of Cultural Commemorations) organised a tour to celebrate ‘Xacobeo 2010’ which meant we could carry out a tour of over thirty towns in Castilla and León, Navarra, La Rioja and Galicia during July 2010. This show was also performed at the Medieval Festival of Elche in Alicante as part of the official program.
