Return to the Mail Drop Info Page.

Mail Drop is an IMAP e-mail client for the Macintosh under development at
Baylor University. Although anyone can use Mail Drop, it is being developed
for use at Baylor by Baylor users. Any features (or lack of same) are there
for the benefit of Baylor users.
Background Info
During the summer of '93, the
Academic Computing section of the
Center for Computing and Information Systems department at Baylor decided
that it was time to provide e-mail services for the general student body (not
just those who happened to have VAX accounts). It was decided that a system
based on IMAP (rather than POP) would work best in our environment. More than
anything else, the fact that users would be able access their mail from a
different workstation each time without carrying floppy disks with them sold
us on IMAP. The major concern that we had about IMAP was the fact that there
were no stable Macintosh programs at the time. (Baylor has a lot of Macs so
this was somewhat important.) We decided to write our own.
Mail Drop was originally designed to be a simple program, providing basic
e-mail functionality, and not much more. Although there are now a few more
features than in the first release, hopefully novice users (like most of our
students) are not overwhelmed by its complexity.
To be continued...
