Return to the Mail Drop Info Page.

This document is meant to describe a few of the most basic functions of Mail Drop - working with the INBOX, reading mail, and sending mail. It provides just enough information to get you started. For more detailed instructions see the Users Guide.

The INBOX

The INBOX is the mailbox where all of your mail is stored.

Opening the INBOX

To open your INBOX choose Open INBOX from the Mail menu. You will need to enter a valid ID and password to continue. At Baylor, these are the same "Bear ID" and password that are used to access the Macs and PC's in the labs. If you get a "Can't connect to somehost,143" error, then your host is probably not running an IMAP server. Contact your system administrator for assistance.

The Message List

Once your ID has been accepted, you will see a window that contains a list of the messages stored in your INBOX.

Reading Messages

To read a message, select it (e.g., by clicking on it), and choose Read from the Mail menu. You can also read it by pressing return or enter. This will fetch the message from the server and display it in a window.

Saving or Printing the Message

You can save a message to a local file by choosing Save As... from the File menu. You can save the message as a text file or as a message file. If you save the message as a message instead of text, then when you open it later Mail Drop will treat it as if you had just read it from your INBOX.

You can print a message by choosing Print... from the File menu.

Sending Mail

Composing New Mail

To compose and send a message choose Compose New Message from the Mail menu. This will open a new window.

Adding Recipients

To add a recipient to the recipient list, click the "To..." button or press command-T. This will open a dialog where you specify the recipient's e-mail address and real name.

Type the recipient's e-mail address in the top part. If the recipient is using the same server that you are connected to, then you don't need to include the "@whatever.whatever" part of the address - Mail Drop will do it for you. You can also type the recipient's real name if you want.

Sending the Message

After you have entered the text and subject of your message, and have specified the message's recipients, you are ready to send the message. You can send the message by selecting Send from the Mail menu, by pressing command-M or command-enter, or by clicking the "Send" button. Mail Drop will open a connection to the server and send your message.
