Description of the tasks

  • The adaptation and implementation of computer based training seminar packages for drivers – particularly for commercial and passenger transport drivers - will include the following work packages and tasks:

(WP 0) Management and Coordination

  • Project monitoring, management and a coordination of the tasks between the partners have to be guaranteed during all of the project phases. The following activities are foreseen to achieve a good project management:
  • Administrative, technical and financial project management by DVR.
  • Steering group formed by partners provides supervision and advice, an internal quality assurance of the final report, the CBTs and the handbook detailed discussion of project, distribution of tasks and project objective.

(WP 1) Revision of similar tools in the partner countries

  • With the aim of assessing the level of development of similar tools and the scope of its use, the products that in each participating country might be available will be reviewed. It will thus be possible to better guide the translation and adaptation in each country, as well as the assessment of the proposed tools: CBT "Müdigkeit" (fatigue) as well as the CBT "physics of driving". At the same time, it will be possible to detect that there are some road safety content deficiencies as far as these e-learning tools are concerned.

(WP 2) Translation of CBTs

  • In a first step, the learning and teaching material has to be translated.
  • The written and audible content of the CBT "Müdigkeit" (fatigue) as well as the CBT "physics of driving" will be translated into Spanish and Polish.
  • The German training version for Austria will only be analysed.
  • The training guidelines will also be translated into Spanish and Polish.
  • The audio parts - also the animated cartoon figures named Paule and Karl in the original version - will be spoken by native speakers.
  • Two speakers per language will be employed. The parts of the characters to be spoken (off voice, video recording, voices of the two animated figures) will be distributed after mutual consultation and selection of speakers.
  • All translated texts will be integrated into the programme. All necessary modifications for longer texts will be considered, which is especially true for graphic representations.
  • Preparation of drafts for booklet and cover.
  • In a kick-off meeting with all project partners, the first versions of the computer based training programmes shall be presented and handed out to the partners.
  • During the kick-off meeting the project itself, the distribution of tasks and the objective of the project shall be discussed in detail.

(WP 3) Pilot Implementation

  • After translation of the CBTs and other materials in a first version, the programmes have to undergo testing to work out the adaptation needs into the specific language and cultural environments. In this project phase the following activities are foreseen: Four one day seminars with around 15 participants each will be organized in every participant country in different and representative cities, also in Germany. The participants shall be truck and bus drivers as well as managers or leaders of transport companies and driving schools. The seminars are aimed at presenting the new e-learning tool and at collecting information about the acceptance of the learning material. A draft programme is added in 'Methodology'. A trainer shall conduct the seminars in close co-operation with the participant organisation of each country. A special questionnaire will be developed for the purpose of testing the general acceptance of e-learning materials and will also include questions concerning future dissemination. The questionnaire - which must be available in every language of the project partners - also has the function to provide information about the acceptance of these specific CBTs, their contents and the quality of the translations. Furthermore, it shall sample the weakness or potential improvements of the CBTs as well as the training seminar. The analysis of the questionnaire will be undertaken at national level by the participant organisations and will become part of the national report. The reports will contain a short state of the art overview of the availability of e-learning tools for professional drivers (bus or truck drivers) in the respective countries. Then a global analysis will be carried out by comparing the participant countries.
One month after the seminar, a structured telephone inquiry will be undertaken to the seminar participants to obtain information about how often the CBT was used after the seminar, about the chapters or parts which have been used again, which improvements are suggested and whether the user has recommended/shown the CBT to another colleague or person.

In summary:

  • Organisation of 4 seminars with around 15 participants each in every participant country
  • Seminars aimed at presenting the tool and at collecting information about the acceptance of the learning material. The seminars are conducted by qualified trainers. In Germany, the seminars will focus more on the acceptance rather than the adaptation issues.
  • Development of 2 questionnaires (pre and post seminars) in each language of the project partners for evaluation purposes
  • Questionnaires to be analysed at national level and to become part of the national report.
  • Global analysis of the questionnaires for comparison between the several countries
  • Structured telephone inquiries after one month

(WP 4) Adaptation of Tools

  • As a result from WP 3, the language and culture related adaptations will be undertaken. The objective of this working phase is the
  • Identification of obstacles for the acceptance of CBTs in general
  • Identification of obstacles for the acceptance of CBTs in the specific working environment
  • Identification of specific national obstacles or restraints and of common obstacles.

To achieve this goal, the following activities must be carried out:

  • International 2 days workshop including all project partners, probably with some professional drivers as well as transport company managers and driving school trainers to discuss the national reports of WP 3 and to develop strategic adaptation plans containing the following aspects:
  • content
  • technical aspects
  • methodology
  • national particularities
  • development of a list of tasks for adaptation of the CBTs to achieve final national versions
  • final adaptation of the CBTs.

(WP 5) Dissemination Strategy

  • One of the purposes of the project is to create a basis for dissemination of this learning material. Therefore, with active involvement of the partners in a last meeting, an overview of the organisational structures of the haulage transport sector, driving schools and public road transport sector will be given. As a result of the international workshop of WP 4 a "Marketing Strategy" for each country will be developed by the participant organisations taking into account the organisational framework as well as the demand structure. For the promotion of the CBTs, the strategy shall include public relation measures to raise the knowledge about the existence of these new learning tools. The dissemination strategy shall consider the use of these CBTs in training courses for professional drivers, at workplaces and for individual use at home or elsewhere. The German seminar designed for 1 day and for half day courses will be presented, and the seminar adaptation to the specific needs of Spain, Poland and Austria will be discussed. The aim is to offer in these countries training courses with a similar design, where the use of CBTs is embedded in the learning units for instance for professional drivers' refreshing courses. The provision of these CBTs as shareware in the internet shall be tested.

Activities:

  • Overview of organisational frames
  • Development of national marketing strategies
  • Consideration of SME working environments in the dissemination plan
  • Using CBTs in training courses for professional drivers, at workplaces and for individual use at home or elsewhere considered in the dissemination plan.
  • Testing the provision of CBTs as shareware
  • Final meeting to discuss training units based on the German model of implementation.

(WP 6) Recommendations

  • Highlighting key success factors and potential implementation barriers in other countries or at European level.
  • Synthesis of all internal reports and quality control by steering group.
  • Description of the implementation strategy and the findings of the previous work packages.
