On 16 December 2024, the inaugural seminar of project ‘Sound Cities. Urban Phonospheres of the Mediterranean (1500-1900)’ (FonUrMed) was held.
This seminar was the official start of our activities as an interdisciplinary team committed to the reconstruction and analysis of phonosphere in historic urban environments of the Mediterranean.
During the seminar, each member of the team exposed how their work complies with the project purpose. It was highlighted the collection of data of urban phonosphere, historic reconstruction of events where music and sound played a key role and the contextualization of sound activities in specific communities.
Furthermore, it was also addressed the theme and planning of seminars to encourage methodological exchange, especially with professional colleagues from similar disciplines who work on Mediterranean issues.
There was also time to coordinate the activities, priorities and group stays, as well as the possible congresses in which to participate.
The second part of the seminar was oriented to the presentation of the volume Eximeno revisitado: pensamiento y teoría musical en la Europa ilustrada. In charge of it was its editor, Alberto Hernández Mateos (University of Salamanca). This activity is part of the ‘Sound Cities. Urban Phonospheres of the Mediterranean (1500-1900)’ (FonUrMed) project, and it was a space to reflect on Eximeno’s contributions to musical theory during the European enlightenment.
