GIUV2013-094
The members of the Arsmaya Group (GIUV2013-094) have been carrying out uninterrupted field work in the field of art, archaeology, cultural heritage and gender studies since 2000, in Spain, Europe and America. The team includes experts in art and archaeology, as well as specialists in architecture, restoration, the physical-chemical analysis of materials, development cooperation and gender studies. Research activities in Spain and Europe have been aimed at intervention projects in historic buildings, archaeological research in the surrounding areas, the analysis of exhumed materials (ceramics, glass, coins, bone remains, etc.) and the study of collections preserved in museums, as well as other heritage documentation activity through the use of new digital technologies. In Europe, the main activity has been carried out in the Valencian Community and in Rome. In America, archaeological research has been carried out in the department of Petén (Guatemala) and on the Yucatan peninsula (Mexico), with the purpose of investigating and valuing the rich heritage of the Mayan cities of these regions. The archaeological sites in La Blanca and Chilonché, in Guatemala (2004-2019), and Uxmal, in Mexico (2016-2024) have been studied intensively. Another of the Group's research activities is the study of Mayan architecture through the analysis of compositional criteria, formal solutions, architectural typologies, construction systems and materials used in the construction of buildings, as well as the iconographic analysis of the artistic expressions with which they were adorned, including graffiti art. These activities have been carried out continuously since 2005 through numerous R&D&I projects granted by different institutions: the Ministry of Education, the Generalitat Valenciana, the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain. This line of research also includes that which has been developed in recent years on applying the gender approach in the interpretation of the spaces and uses of the buildings researched, through the project Women, Art and Antiquity. Breaking Clichés. In the field of archaeometry, the Group develops two projects: Archaeometry of Color in the Mayan Area and Archaeometry of Cosmetics and Perfume in Mesoamerica. Through the first, the physical-chemical characterisation of mural paintings from the various settlements investigated is carried out. The second project aims to learn about the substances used in the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica to prepare body pigments and fragrances used by the elite. The group also carries out many activities to transfer knowledge to society, especially those developed within the La Blanca Project (the creation of an interpretation centre, open-air musealisation of the archaeological site, training for the inhabitants of the environment in various activities related to tourism, the conservation of cultural heritage and the empowerment of women) and others derived from the Women, Art and Antiquity. Breaking Clichés project. In the last decade, the incorporation of new technologies applied to pre-Columbian cultural heritage, through the Prometeo-Mayatech project for Research Groups of Excellence (Generalitat Valenciana 2016-2019 and 2020-2023), has made it possible to generate numerous 3D model restorations of the buildings and objects investigated, both in La Blanca and Chilonché and in other important Mayan World Heritage cities, such as Quirigúa and Tikal in Guatemala, or Uxmal in Mexico, thus achieving greater dissemination to the general public of the results of said research (http://mayatech.artemaya.es/). A similar project is that carried out in the ancient spezieria Santa Maria della Scala in Rome.
