The FORTHEM Laboratory for Multilingualism in School and Higher Education is organising a researcher meeting with Sergio Maruenda-Bataller, University of Valencia, Spain. He will talk about the context of his research embedded in social inequality and activism. This informal meeting will also provide a space for participants to share their research backgrounds and discuss ideas for possible collaboration with Sergio and his colleagues.
The researcher meeting is part of the Forthem Campus, organised by the University of Jyväskylä.
Sergio Maruenda-Bataller (PhD) is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Valencia, where he teaches English language and linguistics. He is also a member of the GenText research group, which has promoted research on discourse, gender and power.
His main research interests focus on (critical) discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, social and cognitive pragmatics and translation. He has co-authored articles on naming practices and negotiation of meaning in journalistic discourse and on the linguistic representation of violence against women in contemporary Spanish and British newspapers, as well as book chapters on the role of news values in the discursive construction of violence against women in the press.
His most recent work, which offers a feminist critical discursive approach to journalistic reporting on violence against women, will appear in the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Discourse and Disinformation.
Sergio will spend a mobility period in Jyväskylä between 26-28 September. He is also invited to give two public lectures as part of the FORTHEM Campus course Approaches to Multilingualism (registration via this form):
