Action in University of Opole (Poland)
Superbugs FORTHEM is a transnational project led by professors Belén Fouz and Sergi Maicas (Department of Microbiology and Ecology, Faculty of Biology, Universitat de València) in cooperation with Università degli Studi di Palermo, Uniwersytet Opolsky and Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and linked secondary schools.
Between 21 and 24 of May 2023, the last meeting of the project has been held in the University of Opole. Professors and students have carried out different activities in and out of the secondary school Publiczne Liceum Ogólnoksztalcacer nr II in Opole and discussed future actions within the FORTHEM alliance.
The whole project has allowed to train around one hundred university students (US) who have worked in more than 30 secondary school in these countries. US have stablished teaching relationships among the antibiotic’s crisis, antimicrobial resistance, and superbugs, using an infographics exhibition as the main tool. Our students act as monitors in secondary schools, using game-based classroom quizzes to engage students and improve learning. Moreover, activities are evaluated by means of anonymous surveys.
Antibiotics misuse is a public health problem due to the appearance of resistant strains in almost all human pathogens, making infectious diseases more difficult to treat. The search for solutions requires the development of new antimicrobials as well as novel strategies, including increasing social awareness of the problem.
The antibiotics crisis that we are currently suffering requires awareness and transmission capacity to other colleagues, younger students, friends and family, and, in general, to European and world society.
The main goal of the Superbugs Project has been to expand the activity to different universities of the FORTHEM alliance. In fact, we have established different nodes capable of transmitting the health problem in their respective environments.
This project has also been supported by Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, Center for Education and Quality (Lifelong Learning Service and Educational Innovation), Languages Service, Equality Units and Student Information and Promotion Service from Universitat de València.
