FORTHEM Collective Short-Term Mobility (cSTM)

The University of Valencia recently concluded a highly impactful collective short-term mobility program titled "Myopia: A Visual Problem on the Rise. Prevention and Dissemination to Society." The program aimed to deepen knowledge about myopia and its associated risks while highlighting its profound impact on society. Engaging students from various nationalities and educational backgrounds, the initiative provided a unique opportunity to explore the subject matter from diverse perspectives.

During the mobility activity, participants worked in small groups of 5 to 6 people, focusing on four key areas related to myopia:

-Prevalence and Risk Factors: Extensive research was conducted to understand the prevalence and risk factors associated with myopia, shedding light on the escalating rates of this condition.

-Optical and Optometric Treatments: The significance of special designs of ophthalmic and contact lenses in effectively controlling myopia was emphasized, underscoring their importance as vital tools for managing the condition to reduce the associated risk factors.

-Other Treatments: Participants explored various treatment options, including pharmacological approaches, and combined therapeutic methods, providing a comprehensive overview of alternative treatments.

-Prevention and Ergonomics: The importance of adopting preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy diet, spending time outdoors, and taking regular visual breaks was addressed, highlighting their role in minimizing the risks associated with myopia.

Throughout the week-long activity, participants conducted scientific literature searches, shared relevant information from databases, and managed bibliographic references. The culmination of their efforts was the final day, dedicated to disseminating the knowledge they had acquired to society. Students took the initiative to design informative brochures based on their research findings. The dissemination activity was organized at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. Students distributed the self-designed brochures to individuals, particularly targeting families with children and teenagers. The goal was to provide valuable information and promote awareness about the significance of managing myopia. The dissemination activity served as a bridge between academia and the community, fostering a direct connection with the public. By sharing their knowledge and insights, participants aimed to empower individuals to take proactive steps toward safeguarding their vision and overall well-being. In addition to the academic components, outdoor activities such as cultural visits and sports were organized to provide visual relaxation and to promote social interaction.

The mobility activity culminated in a highly successful outcome, as participants reported a strong sense of satisfaction through the satisfaction questionnaires. The communication and fruitful exchange of knowledge among students further enhanced the overall experience. Indeed, in addition to advancing understanding on the critical issue of myopia, this mobility program created a platform for future collaborations and initiatives. By embracing diversity and encouraging the exchange of ideas, the University of Valencia continues to promote and nurture the growth of knowledge.
