What is a doctoral thesis?

The doctoral thesis is defined as an original research work carried out by the candidate in any discipline.

Deposit authorisation

The thesis deposit procedure is initiated by the PhD student through the Electronic Headquarters. Instructions for the submission of applications are available in the thesis deposit guide.

 

Your dossier will have to include the compulsory activities and the minimum number of hours specified in the Doctoral Programme, before proceeding to the deposit. You must also have your research plan and activity document approved.

Defence authorisation

Once the thesis has been assessed by the external examiners and the public presentation process has been completed, the Sub-Committee of the School’s Standing Committee authorises the defence and appoints the members of the examining board.

Structure of the defence:

Once the defence session has been convened, it begins with the presentation of the thesis to the members of the examination board, followed by a discussion with them.

Doctors present at the public event may ask questions.

The examining board will award the overall mark for the thesis according to the following scale:

  • Ineligible
  • Approved
  • Notable
  • Excellent
SIf the qualification is "excellent", the mention cum laude may be awarded with the favourable and secret vote of the three members of the selection board.

The secretary of the examining board will have to issue the grade report and all other documentation to the Doctoral School.
