Survey on the uses, habits and cultural demands

The Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture, Equality and Communication reveals the results of the Survey on Cultural Uses, Habits and Demands from the students of the UV.

The Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality is immersed in a process of reflection through the use of a constant assessment of their activities, objectives and obtained results. This objective is covered by a study aimed at knowing the cultural uses, habits, demands and values of the university students. The aim at generating information on the students’ participation in the UV’s cultural life, deepening in the use they make of the available cultural services in order to value and assess in which scopes they can act and where there is space and path until improvement is reached.

The results report has a modest expectative on having a practical utility and helping the improvement of the actions carried out on a collective which is over 58,000 members and their satisfaction, which is key for a good development of the Institution in a highly competitive university background and with a situation of economic crisis where resources rationalization is a budgetary imperative.

In order to assess the opinion and degree of satisfaction of the UV’s student community for the 2012-2013 school year (58.390), they have counted with a representative sample of 32.100 people. The students’ participation has been high, obtaining a response rate of the 19% from the total sample. In other words, 6104 individuals who have given their opinion in the electronic questionnaire.

The results reflect unavoidable strength at the Institution, such as their wide diversity on the offer and the variety of physical spaces where they are carried out, which allow captivating a varied public and which positively values the quality of the offer. Some weaknesses could be, on the one hand, the lack of adaptation between cultural taste and consumption the university students carry out and the offer coming from the institutional level. On the other hand, the answers manifest that the wide variety of cultural programming offered from the Institution does not always achieve to get to the people interested either by the channel used or the content of the published information.

Regarding factors with an external origin, the threats, and the students’ overcharging agendas should be mentioned as they make it hard for them to combine working activities with training one as well as participating in the university cultural life. Additionally, the information saturation received via social networks and electronic makes it difficult to access a potentially interested public on the cultural offer of the Universitat. However, there are important opportunities to take advantage of, such as the fact that the university population has a high cultural consumption outside the Universitat and, obviously culture attracts more culture.

From the Office of the Vice Principal for Culture and Equality there is a firm compromise of transparency, to which this survey may help develop in a periodic way extensible for the rest of the university collectives such as the Teaching and Research Staff and the Administrative and Service Staff.  With the appropriate regulation and extension, this survey shall be used as an assessing and following up tool for the cultural policies developed by the Institution.
