EU’s statement on the Women’s Day

Women’s Day

The social scourge of genre violence and inequality suffered by women throughtout the world is, increasingly, a topic of media and institutional interest. On the occasion of the Women’s Day, we remember the support of EU in the fight against this problem.

8 march 2017

To protect and empower both women and girls so they can take fully advantage of their potential. This is one of the many objectives that the European Union has to complete its commitment with the fight for real equaility of women in both private and public sphere.

Currently, there are more women integrated in the labour market than ever, but there is still a long road ahead. It is calculated that 2016 was a record year regarding the wome’s employment rate in the European Union: it reached the 65%. However, there is still a huge difference with men’s percentage: 77%. Taking this into account, concepts such as salary gap between women and men or the glass ceiling for women are still a reality in the labour environment.

Women are usually the most vulnerable in situations of conflict and intolerance against them and misogyny remain the order of the day inside and outside the borders of the European Union

Little by little, women’s situation is improving, although the change is really slow and, above all, much more can be accomplished. Women are usually more vulnerable in conflict situations and intolerance and misogyny are the centre of the news.
