International Seminar 'Thinking of vulnerability' held on the Faculty of Law, with renowned European specialists in Private International Law

International Seminar 'Thinking of vulnerability'

Funded by the project Sustainable in the state of global moving (JUSOST or Justicia sostenible en estado de mudanza global) – CIPROM 2023-64 (GVA), on 31 October 2025 took place the International Seminar 'Thinking of Vulnerability' at the Faculty of Law, a session focused on legal reflection on vulnerability in cross-border contexts.

Three of the most renowned European specialists in Private International Law:

  • Prof. Thalia Kruger, professor of International Private Law at the University of Antwerp,
  • Prof. Máire Ní Shúilleabháin, professor of International Private Law at the University College Dublin,
  • Prof. Jan von Hein, professor of International Private Law at the University of Freiburg (Germany).

The interventions key issues such as the protection of victims of domestic violence regarding the 1980 Hague Convention, the vulnerability generated by the activity of European corporations in foreign communities, and the protection of adults in international situations, offering a comparative and critical analysis of current legal mechanisms.

The seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Carlos Esplugues Mota, professor of Private International Law at the UV, and counted with the academic coordination of Dr. María González Marimón.

The session concluded with an open debate among speakers and attendees, highlighting the need to incorporate vulnerability as criteria in Private International Law to move towards a more human, inclusive and sustainable transnational justice.

This session is part of the JUSOST project goals, focused on analysing a contemporary transformation of justice systems in a global context that is constantly changing.
