Gender, Generation and Geography: discovering a bigger history

Conference for free of Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern (London).

The next March 2 it will take place the conference “Gender, Generation and Geography: discovering a bigger history” of Frances Morris, organised by the Chair for Artistic Studies 20th and 21st Centuries (IVAM-UV-UPV-UMH).

Frances Morris has played a key role in the development of Tate Modern, at first she joined as a curator in 1987, then she became the Head of Displays at Tate Modern (2000-2006) and the Director of the International Art Collection until April 2016, when she was appointed director of Tate Modern (London).

She has commissioned reference exhibitions, many of them have been large-scale international collaborations, including three important retrospective female artists, as Louise Bourgeois in 2007, Yayoi Kusama in 2012 and Agnes Martin in 2015.

At the start of her career, Frances Morris commissioned Paris Post War: Art and Existentialism in 1993 and 1995 worked with Stuart Morgan at the exhibition Rites of Passage. Specialised in European international and post-war contemporary art, she has widely published about that issue and she has commissioned projects of several contemporary artists of Great Britain and international level, among them Miroslaw Balka, Chris Burden, Geneviève Cadieux, Sophie Calle, Mark Dion, Luciano Fabro, Paul McCarthy and Nicholas Pope.

Frances Morris is licensed in History of Art at the University of Cambridge and graduated in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art of London. She is director of the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edimburg, member of CIMAM Management Board and member of the Advisory Committee of the Contemporary Art Museum of Serralves, Oporto.
