The Modernization Service of the Provincial Council of Valencia and the University of Valencia have created the Chair of Intelligent and Sustainable Territories with the aim of promoting digital transformation in the rural environment by encouraging the development and implementation of technological and sustainable solutions that favor the competitiveness and innovation of the business network of the territory.
The expansion of new technologies and the concept of smartcities has gone beyond the scope of large cities, and more and more small and medium-sized municipalities are looking to implement innovative and sustainable solutions that help them to improve the well-being of their inhabitants, although they encounter the difficulty of lacking the necessary knowledge or adequate budget to be able to tackle projects on an individual basis.
The Valencia Provincial Council plays a fundamental role in bringing together and proposing actions that are useful to the different municipalities, although the growing demand for sustainable solutions means that the technical resources available to the Provincial Council are insufficient to cover the expansion that has taken place in recent years. The University of Valencia, through the Institute on Robotics and Information and Communication Technologies (IRTIC), has been collaborating with the Provincial Council as a technical advisor for several years now in a very satisfactory manner, a relationship that has culminated in the creation of the Chair of Intelligent and Sustainable Territories.
Through the chair directed by Dr. Juan José Martínez Durá, experts from IRTIC's LISITT research group will collaborate with technicians from the Provincial Council of Valencia and the municipalities of the province in carrying out training, dissemination and technological consultancy activities from an independent perspective. Among the activities included is the promotion of the Connecta-Valencia platform among the municipalities of the province.
This platform of the Provincial Council of Valencia integrates data from different types of sensors installed in the different municipalities, incorporating information on weather, mobility, air quality, parking, noise, etc. The platform is accessible to both local councils and the general public and offers integrated information through dashboards, provides tools for data analysis and allows the data collected to be exported through an open data portal.
Another of its goals will focus on the identification of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators to be applied within the territory of the province of Valencia in order to determine the available sources and mechanisms for data collection, to assess progress towards the goal of creating sustainable cities and territories.
Finally, the Chair will also promote training and research activities within the university framework, promoting competitions and prizes for undergraduate and master's degree students' work related to the use of the Provincial Council's open data or the implementation of new technologies in municipalities in the province of Valencia within the scope of the activities covered by the Chair.
