A collaboration agreement has been signed between the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of the Valencian Government and the Universitat de València for the creation of this institutional chair.
In the framework of this agreement, this chair will conduct a series of educational, cultural, investigative and disseminating activities directed at the academic community. The main focus of these activities will be the promotion and dissemination of traditional music and dance of Valencian origin. The chair aims to make these activities available to both the scientific community and to the Valencian people as part of their intangible cultural heritage. The Chair is managed by doctors Enric Olivares and Sergi Doménech, both from the Department of Art History of the Universitat de València.
Music and dance are fundamental pillars of our region’s culture and tradition. Music creates the rhythms that guide the movements of dance, which, in turn, brings the sounds and melodies of music to life. Similar to other traditional cultural expressions, music and dance represent the rich, living heritage that reflects our history and defines our identity as Valencian people.
It is because of this that the Chair for Traditional Music and Dance, through its many collaborations, aims to be a tool for study and dissemination of this intangible heritage, seeking to provide a better understanding of its past and its present, as well as enhancing its future.
For university students, the study of cultural heritage is an important element of a well-rounded education, as it can be used as a tool for social change. Understanding heritage can help students to promote the development of a freer, more diverse community that encourages active participation and critical thinking, and advocates for curiosity and lifelong learning.
