.
L-serine (Ser) in plants is biosynthesized through three routes: the phosphorylated pathway of serine biosynthesis (PPSB), the glycerate pathway, and the glycolate pathway which contributes the most to Ser production from a quantitative point of view. The functional characterisation of the PPSB in Arabidopsis revealed that this pathway is at the crossroads between carbon, nitrogen and sulfur metabolism, and as such, it could represent a promising target for crop improvement strategies. We therefore decided to evaluate the importance of this pathway in maize, one of the most important agronomic crops worldwide, by a gain-of-function approach. Our results indicate that , metabolic engineering of PPSB can be a very useful tool in the forthcoming climate conditions to improve crop nutritional value.
