A study involving the University of Valencia discovers a new route of beneficial insects exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides

Researchers of the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Research (IVIA), the University of Valencia (UV) and Wageningen University (WUR) in the Netherlands have identified a new route of exposure of beneficial insects (natural enemies of pests and pollinators) to neonicotinoid insecticides (they act on the central nervous system of insects and are not very toxic in mammals). The study, published this week in the prestigious journal PNAS, suggests that honeydew provides a route of exposure that has so far been overlooked and may cause acute or chronic deleterious effects on beneficial insects.

Discovery of a new function of an enzyme that could be used to prevent brain tumours

Researchers from the ERI Biotecmed, in the Department of Cellular Biology of the Universitat de València, have described an enzyme -TET3- that repress the transcription of a gene associated to the human syndrome of Prader-Willi, a rare illness that causes intellectual disability, predispose to the formation of tumours and affects to 1 in every 15.000 newborns. The work has been published in Nature Communications.

Researchers of the Universitat de València describe a new function of a protein implied in the genomic transcription

José García Martínez and José E. Pérez Ortín, both members of the group of Yeasts Functional Genomics of the Universitat de València, participated in the international research which proves that the protein Xrn1 coordinates the three main stages of the gen expression (transcription, translation and degradation) in contrast to what was believed up to now. According to the research published yesterday in the journa Nature Communications, it is predictable that this phenomenon will be common to every eukaryote organism, including the human beings.
