Professor Paulina Ribera, from our Department of Language and Literature Teaching, has received the Telemachus Award 2010, in the category of informative books, because of her book “El repte d’ensenyar a escriure”, published under Perifèric Edicions.
The award is part of the activities of the "Telemachus Chair" of the Complutense University of Madrid, led by Professor Jaime García Padrino in collaboration with the SM Foundation. The prize aims to recognise the quality of scientific papers published on the experience and the importance of reading and writing and the development of reading and writing habits in the context of different educational levels. The book stems from a doctoral thesis that which shows the possibility to invent and produce written texts with preschool students regardless of their knowledge.
A group of teachers disclose their thinking and practice and also the difficulties and solutions that they find. It highlights the role of teacher supervision, which allows the introduction of students in the complexity of written language according to their age. By means of a set of activities, resources, materials and strategies, the book shows how phonological awareness and other skills involved in the learning of liberal arts can be developed from the use of written language.
The author, whose main line of research is the teaching/learning of reading and writing, has helped to disseminate advances in the field by designing teaching materials for preschool and primary education, by participating in lifelong learning courses for teachers and with the publication of general knowledge articles, among others.
