Commemorative event for the 150 anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

On Tuesday, 5 May 2015, at 12:00, at the former assembly hall of the Senate (Plaza de la Marina Española, 8 Madrid) will take place the commemorative event for the 150 anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

HRH the King, Felipe, will chair the commemorative event organised by the Official Association of the Telecommunication Engineers, under the heading “Telecommunications and ICT: innovation engines”.

The Deputy Director José Torres will attend the event representing the ETSE-UV.

The International Telecommunication Union is a specialised agency of the United Nations System which has its headquarters in Ginebra. The Union has 3 main areas of activity that respond to the goals of the organisation: Standardisation of Communication area, the Radio Communications area and the area of Telecommunications Development. The Union started its activities in 1865, focusing on coordinating telegraph communications and after on telephone communications. In 1947 it joined the United Nations System, moving its headquarters from Berna to Ginebra. The ITU is based on the principle of international cooperation between governments (Member States) and the private sector (Members of the Sector, Partners and Academic Institutions). Currently the Union is composed of 193 state members and more than 700 entities from the private sector and academic institutions.
