The main aim of the Degree in Modern Languages and Literature is the training in advanced knowledge and competencies in modern  languages and their literatures within a general philological and humanistic frame. The student body will receive training mainly in a foreign language and, complementary, in a second language which may be either national or international.
The studies are organised in specialisation itinerary; a main one (major) and a complementary one (minor), which makes it possible to have a wide range of combinations between majors and minors.  The possibilities are:

  • Major: German, French and Italian
  • Minors: German, English, Arabic, Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Eastern Asian Languages and literatures (Japanese and Chinese).

It is not possible to take a major and a minor in the same language; even so, it is possible to combine a foreign language in the major itinerary and Catalan or Spanish in the minor or, even, you can take more than a major or minor.
Ideally, the student body in this Degree already has knowledge of both foreign languages although, excepting French because it is easier to take it in secondary education, there is no minimum level required. Even so, it is very advisable to have taken a second foreign language in secondary education as well as philologically-oriented subjects (literary studies) and which develop communicative abilities in our own languages.

Along with the description and active learning of languages, the degree deals with topics like the relationship between culture and the media (newspapers, internet, etc.) the relationship between literature and visual arts (cinema, theatre...) dialectal varieties in everyday use of language and arts, as well as commentary and literary and linguistic analysis techniques in the chosen languages. The degree also offers a panoramic views on other professional uses, such as teaching, translation and book edition.
