On 24 October 2019, the census of homeless people in the city of Valencia was carried out, an activity in which the University of Valencia participated as well as different public and private entities.
The main objective of the Diagnosis of Homeless People in the city of Valencia was an approach to describe the magnitude of homelessness in our city, and to analyse the socio-demographic characteristics of these people, but also to publicise the entities that work with this problem and raise awareness in the community about this visible reality.
The human resources available for the data collection were the registered volunteers (582 people participated out of the 807 initially registered) who were distributed in a total of 74 groups. All the participants received a previous training session. In terms of participation in the count, 831 homeless people were identified in the city of Valencia.
The data collected from the people who participated in the census will now be sent to the University of Valencia to carry out a thorough study on the causes, problems and solutions that can be implemented to try to reintegrate these people into society.
The ‘Noche S’ in Valencia confirms itself as a tool for mobilisation, participation and awareness-raising among citizens in the face of an invisible reality. With the aim of quantifying a situation that is explicitly found in the street, we have achieved a space for social intervention that could measure its evolution over time if similar studies continue.
The next ‘Noche S’ will take place in October 2022, with the intention of continuing with the first diagnosis carried out and proposing actions to address this issue in terms of development.
