On Monday 16 June, the FungiaLab laboratory of IATA-CSIC has organised a very relevant seminar with the participation of two top international scientists: Chris Hittinger (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA) and Rike Stelkens (Stockholm University, Sweden). The seminar will start at 09:00 h in the IATA Assembly Hall.
The day, entitled ‘Microbial Marvels: Biodiversity and Evolution of Yeasts’, invites us to discover the fundamental role of yeasts, not only in bread and beer, but also as key models for understanding evolution, adaptation and biodiversity.
The event will mainly consist of two talks:
09:30am - 10:30am: Chris Hittinger.
‘The Genomic Making of Yeast Metabolic Diversity’.
He will show how the evolution of the genome has driven amazing metabolic innovations, from fermentative capabilities to stress resistance. A talk on genetics, biotechnology and biodiversity, with connections to health and sustainability.
10:30am - 11:30am: Rike Stelkens
‘Experimental Evolution of Thermal Performance and Ecology-Driven Reproductive Isolation in Yeast’.
He will take us to experience evolution live: how environmental pressure can generate new species in the laboratory. A window into the origin of biological diversity.
This seminar is especially aimed at UV and UPV students, PhD students and postdocs, although it is open to the entire scientific community.
