Our laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms that allow microorganisms to survive and adapt to environmental changes. Among the signaling systems under study are complex His-Asp phosphorelay systems, such as the Rcs system in Salmonella—which is conserved in other enterobacteria—and His-Asp phosphorelay systems in the model fungus Chaetomium thermophilum and in Candida albicans. Through functional and structural studies, we aim to understand the mechanisms of molecular recognition, signal transduction, and the crosstalk between signaling pathways in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Since these systems are absent in animals, their characterization will enable the identification of targets and the development of new antimicrobial strategies.
Additionally, our laboratory collaborates with other research groups on the structural study of proteins from various organisms, aiming to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that determine their function.
