OASIS

The OASIS project, Operation for Safe, Intelligent and Sustainable Motorways is a CENIT project to be developed between 2008 and 2012.
Description

Its main goal is to define the highway of the future, which will present differentially higher levels of safety, user services and sustainability. For this task we have a group of 16 large Spanish companies and 16 research groups belonging to different universities and national technology centres. The project has a budget of 30, 50 million euros.

The definition of the motorway of the future will be supported by technological innovation, and the research efforts will be guided for improving services in three key areas of high value for society: Service, Safety and Sustainability. The OASIS project conceives the motorway from a global perspective, considering all phases of the cycle life, but paying special attention to the exploitation phase due to its greater weight.

With this global perspective, the research effort will not focus only in the phase of operation of the motorway, but it will search that the innovations and experience acquired in this phase will re-nourish the rest of phases of the motorway cycle life. Thus, LISITT is participating in two vital and important phases of the project, the safety and management of motorways mobility (packages 4 and 5 of the project of a total of 7 existing packages).

Within them, we apply our knowledge, experience and technology in the development of the following services:

e-Call

It is an initiative of the European Commission planned to provide quick assistance to drivers involved in a traffic accident across the European Union. It is estimated that may save 2,500 lives per year in Europe, when it will be introduced in all vehicles, as well as to reduce the seriousness of injuries in a 10-15% of cases. We are developing a new concept of eCall based on the infrastructure, so it is the road which warns the emergency centre when there is an accident, and contact with the operators involved in its management.

New techniques for modeling and characterisation of roads

Traffic preliminary studies: the aim is to create a procedure with which to obtain those places where it may be positive to have a motorway, due to the traffic characteristics of the zone.
Traffic studies on the operational phase: To have a methodology for obtaining information about the state of traffic mobility on the motorway in real time.

Optimisation of the procedure for obtaining origin-destination sources

Design and development of an application that using the methodologies of the “traffic studies in the operational phase” for a motorway, allow us to obtain origin-destination sources and its graphic representation of the existing routes, easily and efficiently (MODA application).

Traffic studies based on metereological data:

Design and development of an application that using the methodologies of the “traffic studies in the operational phase” for a motorway, allow us to obtain origin-destination sources and its graphic representation of the existing routes, easily and efficiently (MODA application).

To optimize the efficiency of sensors-actuators in the concession, for improving information and comfort conditions in front of adverse weather conditions of possible reductions of the level of service or possible congestions in the concession.

Sensorisation of vehicles by new sensor devices

Through the creation of two new devices (speckles that contain a magnetic sensor) we intend to have the ability of identifying the vehicles that pass over them and to obtain statistics on macro and microscopic level, thus getting a new and more powerful ITS, with a better price/quality ratio.

With our participation in all these tasks, as well as other participants we expect that the project OASIS will give benefits in short, medium and long term.
