A research team from the Universitat de València presents to the Municipal School Board the report 'Zoning and admission of students in schools in the city of València, in which, among other conclusions, considers that the single district is inadequate to mitigate school segregation.

The presentation will take place in the press room of the Old Tobacco Company building, Calle Amadeo de Saboya nº 13, on Wednesday 3 April at 5.30 pm.  The study is part of the research project “Mapa escolar Municipal” (Municipal School Map), promoted by the City Council and the Universitat de València, whose main objective is to know the evolution and current situation of the school reality in the city.  Fifteen teachers from the Faculties of Social Sciences, Economics, Pedagogy, Geography and Teaching participate in the research project, which began in 2017.

The report, explains Professor José Manuel Rodríguez Victoriano, director of the research project, is based on a review of national and international research on the issue and an analysis of empirical data on compulsory education in the city of València.  Among the main conclusions, the experts point out that "educational policy decisions, such as the promotion of quasi-market mechanisms promoting school choice options, the establishment of a single district or the publication of school rankings based on the results of external standardised tests in Infant and Primary and Secondary Education centres, promote school segregation".

Likewise, the report considers that "the delimitation of school districts, by itself, is not the most relevant element in the policy of allocating school places in the city".  And also that "the 'single district' for the city of València is inadequate to guarantee equitable access to education, to mitigate school segregation or to guarantee the right of all families to choose a centre".
