Full-time university professor of Histology, Amparo Ruiz Saurí, has been elected dean by the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València. She held this position on duty since last September, following the retirement of Francisco Javier Chorro. Ruiz obtained 50 votes in favour, one against and two blank votes, out of a total of 59 voting members.

In this new phase, the dean will be accompanied by Miguel Martí (secretary), Vanessa de Paredes (vice-dean for Dentistry), Rubén Agustín (vice-dean for Academic Organisation for Dentistry), José Javier Martín (vice-dean for Academic Organisation for Medicine), María Dolores Mauricio (vice-dean for Coordination of Basic Subjects), Mª Desamparados Escudero (vice-dean for Coordination of Clinical Subjects), Miguel Armengot (vice-dean for Clinical Practice and Undergraduate Degree Final Project), Guillermo Sáez (vice-dean for Doctorate and Master's Degrees, and International Relations).

Amparo Ruiz has been full-time university professor of Histology since 30 October. She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat de València in 1984, and obtained her PhD from the same centre in 1993 with the grade of outstanding cum laude.

Her research activity has been focused on histology and morphometry (an imaging technique that deals with the quantitative analysis of the size and shape of structures). Morphometry is used to quantify a character of evolutionary significance, to detect changes in shape in different pathologies compared to normal histology, and to deduce aspects of organisms' ontogeny, function or evolutionary relationships. One of the objectives of morphometry is to statistically test hypotheses about factors affecting shape.

The dean is a member of the Spanish Society of Histology and Tissue Engineering, the Spanish Society of Cardiology, and the Cardiovascular Therapy Network.

Furthermore, she has been a member of the Senate of the Universitat de València, of the Bachelor's Degree Advisory Commission of Studies, of the Committee on Evaluation of Educational Activity, of the Assessment Committee for Teaching Innovation Projects, and of the Counselling Committee for Educational Innovation Proposals. She has also held the positions of vice-dean for Academic Planning and dean on duty of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry since last September.
