Next Thursday May 3, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València will hold the 37th edition of the Freedom of Speech Awards 2018. It is organised by the Association of Valencian Journalists and will take place at the assembly hall at 7 p.m.

The Association of Valencian Journalists will give its award this year to the journalists and photojournalists that were verbally and physically assaulted by a right-wing collective while they were working on the coverage of several acts related to the celebration of the Valencian Community Day. Germán Caballero will collect the award in the event.

Another awardee will be the Mexican collective CIMAC (Comunicación e Información de la Mujer). It has the mission to create and publish news on the social condition of women, to secure that human rights are incorporated in the work of female journalists and to promote media as a tool of social and educative transformation.

The event will be presented by Majo Siscar Banyuls. She was the winner of the 14th Manuel Alcántara International Journalism Award. She worked as correspondent in Mexico for 7 years and is currently working as a journalist for eldiario.es and as an editor in the international magazine 5W.

The Association of Valencian Journalists is a professional organization that represents Valencian reporters in the Federation of Association of Spanish Journalists (FAPE) and the International Federation of Journalists (FIP). It has been organising this events since 1981 to recognise the professionals and collectives that have been distinguished by their fight for the freedom of speech.
