Carme Torras brings together artificial intelligence and science fiction in her conference of the cycle ‘The Great Challenges of Science’

Which challenges do the social networks and the massive use of data present? On the 26th of May at 7 p.m., Carme Torras will give a conference on artificial intelligence, ethics and science fiction at La Nau.

The lecturer of Barcelona Carme Torras will participate in the the cycle ‘The great challenges of science’ with her speech Enxarxats:Tecnologia, ètica i ciència-ficció, which will deal with technology, ethics and science fiction On the 26th of March at 7 p.m. in the ’Aula Magna of the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València.  Carme Torras, a research lecturer of the Institut de Robòtica i informàtica Industrial (IRI) of Barcelona (CSIC-UPC), will explain us the current state of the research on artificial intelligence and the ethical dilemmas which are implied in the massive use of personal data.

Graduated in Mathematics and PhD in Informatics, Carme Torras publishes science fiction books, apart from books and research articles on robotics and neuronal models. This genre has supposed for her some appreciations such as the Primera Columna Award for Miracles perversos (Pagés, 2011) or the Manuel de Pedrolo Award of science fiction for La mutació sentimental (Pagès, 2008). Her last book, Enxarxats (Males Herbes, 2017), a thrilling dystopia, is the title of her conference in the cycle ‘The great challenges of science’ and, under this title, she frames the speech.

The conference is free until the full seating.

The cycle ‘The great challenges of science’ is organised by the Escola Europea de Pensament Lluís Vives together with the scientific journal Mètode on the occasion of the 100 issues of the dissemination journal of the Universitat de València.  This cycle is part of the scheduling of the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València on the occasion of its 20th anniversary and the 520th anniversary of the Universitat de València.

The next conference of the cycle will be given on the 16th of May by Pere Puigdomènech and it will focus on the role of the science when it refers to facing the ecological, energy and resource challenges, which are the result of the development of the society.
