The Botanical Garden of the Universitat de València has hosted the presentation of the Chair for Scientific Culture for Climate Emergency (Chair CCC), a bet for society's implication against climate change whose objective is to educate in sustainability in schools.
Given the current situation of planetary emergency, marked by the existence of several, serious and interconnected problems, among which we can find climate change, our qualification and competence improvement is the first step towards the implementation of the required measures.
In the presentation act, the director of the Chair, Olga Mayoral, has participated together with the representatives of the different organisms that participated in its creation: Paco Alòs, director of CSR and Institutional Relations of Caixa Popular; Celsa Monrós, general director for Climate Change in the Agriculture Consellería, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition; and Rosa Mª Donat, full university professor of the Universitat de València and Vice-Principal for Innovation and Transfer. The act has been moderated by the director of the Botanical Garden, Jaime Güemes.
The director has valued the major opportunity that the Chair CCC means for society as a whole, since it is a project that has achieved to appear and consolidate in our territory in order to acomplish its main objective of raising awareness about the necessity of a socio-environmental change. With this Chair it is intended to go into detail about our knowledge and comprehension of climate change and bring the measures we need to take, both individually and collectively, into alignment.
The Chair CCC focuses on the necessity of using rigorous and stable information sources, such as scientific dissemination, an essential tool to see quandaries from a correct point of view and, additionally, to participate and know the researches that are being carried on in this field.
As a priority, it is also proposed to promote the out of class education as an essential resource in the acquisition of competences regarding sustainability and similar topics. For that purpose, the Botanical Garden will be a green educative space, a resource that will allow to teach these issues in a more attractive and direct way.
Moreover, the director has highlighted the importance that the Chair CCC will have, since it will work with the active faculty of several centres and different educative levels that have never been educated on these subjects, but who have now the opportunity to integrate them in their lessons, taking advantage of the opportunities that the curricula offer. All this with the aim of addressing current socio-environmental issues and climate change from a practical and active perspective.
