The Valencian musician Ona Nua and the Congolese Doudou Nganga are putting on a free concert this Friday 17 November at 7pm at the Capella de la Sapiéncia in the La Nau Cultural Centre of the Universitat de València. During the concert, the musicians will alternate between songs from Equatorial Africa and pieces by Josep Pérez (known as Ona Nua) originally from Alzira. The recital is part of the ‘Músiques urbanes’ series promoted by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society of the UV.

Doudou Nganga, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, will showcase his latest work titled ‘Lokuta’. Doudou has performed with the likes of Manu Chao, Toumani Diabate, Femi Kuti and Neneh Cherry and has participated in both national and international festivals like Rototom, Etnosur, Viñarock and Festiv Bamako in Mali.

On the other hand, Ona Nua will present his work ‘Superpop’ directly following his Ovidi award for best pop record in the Valencian dialect in 2023. As the musician from the Ribera Alta explains, both cultures, Congolese and Valencian will be mixed together in this two-man show, combining songs from both of their albums with both artists reciprocally participating in the other’s songs. It will be a unique concert, explains Ona Nua, one that came together due to the insightful comment and later proposal of a mutual friend who saw the connections between the two artists, both in terms of their intimate lyrics and the warmth of their melodies and simple arrangements. Ona Nua concludes by saying that he is looking forward to playing such emotionally charged music in such a special place (Capella de la Sapiència).
