The Cultural Observatory of the Universitat de València will put on the table the debate about the concept of “ecological humanities” and the development of “symbioethics”. The conference, titled “Metanoia — On the ecosocial conversion we need”, will feature Jorge Riechmann, Ethics and Political Philosophy professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

The conference will take place in the Aula Magna of the La Nau Cultural Centre the next 18 October, at 18:00, and will be moderated by the head of Initiatives of the Observatory, Raúl Abeledo. The entry is free and requires prior registration.

Since mid ‘80s, this prolific essayist has been reflecting on the different dimensions of the ecosocial crisis into which our society is plunged.

The political ecology and the ecological thinking from which he formulates his postulates take shape in the concept of “ecological humanities”. Through this idea, he seeks to develop a “symbioethics” in the framework of a Earth-friendly culture and from a dialogical and interdisciplinary perspective. The conference will address, precisely, his proposal —as inevitable as it is undeniable— for the ecosocial transition and the establishment of a new conception of a sustainable society.

Among other proposals and notions, Riechmann advocates for a drastic reduction of energy use as well as the change of disvalues that prevail in our society.
