The Council of the Generalitat has approved the decree for which the Spanish name of the Faculty of Teacher Training (Facultad de Magisterio) is changed to Facultad de Formación del Profesorado of the Universitat de València. This change answers to a petition made by the academic institution that considers that the new denomination is wider and it fits better in the totality of the training offered in this university centre.

The faculty teaches the Degree in Preschool Education and Degree in Primary School Education but it also allows teachers who want to teach different disciplines in education immediately superior to the mentioned with the Master’s Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training. In fact, the adscription to this Masters to the centre is one of the reasons why, according to the faculty, makes necessary “a more inclusive name than the teacher training, which only applies to the teachers of Preschool and Primary Education. The teachers of Secondary Education and Bachillerato, who have to complete their disciplinary training of degree with that master, found it difficult to identify themselves with that denomination, as it, traditionally, has been associated with teachers from previous educative phases”. Thus, they explain, the denomination Facultad de Formación del Profesorado (Faculty of Teacher training) would be more inclusive and would take into account the teachers of all the level of the educative system.

The faculty also teaches the Master’s Degree in Research in Specific Didactics. And other reason for the change of name is that currently there are numerous groups and research projects of the four specific teaching departments of the centre directly linked with teaching education as evidenced by their names, as well as their principal lines of research.

Moreover, the Universitat de València is the only public university with the name of Teacher Training in Spain. The usual names are Faculty of Education or Faculty of Teacher Training. From the Universitat de València is noted that his latter name gives visibility to all studies run by the centre and with the students, teacher and, their researches can feel more identified.

The change of name, furthermore, is the result of an agreement of the centre from the 31 March 2023 in which the Committee of the Faculty approved the change of name, a name which is already reflected in the English version of the webpage in the Universitat de València as the name of “Magisterio” has a difficult translation in the international language of scientific communication, and, equally, for the name to be understood in other country, this is reflected in agreements, exchanges, writing articles, participation in international projects, it must be stated Faculty of Teacher training as place of registration, terms which makes reference, again, to the training of teachers.

The Faculty of Teacher Training of the Universitat de València has this name since 2011, because of the modifications established by the LOMLOU and the disappearance of university schools. The centre is located since 2010 in the Tarongers Campus of the Universitat de València.
