Full-time university professor Pablo Oñate, receives the National Award in Sociology and Political Science

Professor of the Universitat de València Pablo Oñate received on Wednesday the 2024 National Award in Sociology and Political Science as recognition for his academic, scientific and professional contribution and trajectory in the field of Sociology and Political Science. He received the award from King Felipe VI in ceremony held at the Royal Palace of Madrid.
Full-time university professor of Constitutional Law, Political Science and Administration from the Universitat de València, Oñate Rubalcaba has been recognised for his “brilliant professional and academic trajectory of more than three decades long,” as the jury pointed out. The jury has also emphasised the impact and depth of Oñate Rubalcaba’s work, who has become established as an icon in the study of democracy, electoral systems and political behaviour.
The Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (Centre for Sociological Research) awards “a brilliant professional and academic trajectory.”
The award is given in recognition of a life dedicated to academia, a legacy reflected not only in the 17 books written and edited by Oñate, but also in his active participation in more than 150 scientific conferences around the world. In addition, he has published more than a hundred articles in specialised magazines book chapters, which has turned him into a key figure in the analysis of contemporary political issues, such as political representation, parliamentary elites and the workings of electoral systems.
Oñate Rubalcaba is a graduate of Law and doctor in Political Sciences of the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has been a visiting researcher and professor in prestigious international universities, such as Georgetown University, Oxford University and London School of Economics, among others. Furthermore, he has worked as a international consultant and observer in several electoral processes in countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina, Myanmar, and Mexico, which highlights the global transcendence of his work. He has also worked in important institutional projects in Spain and in international organisations such as Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
This year’s jury was lead by José Félix Tezanos alongside prominent specialists such as Silvia García Ramos, Rosario H. Sánchez Morales and Inés Alberdi Alonso, among others, who unanimously agreed to give the award to Pablo Oñate, highlighting his outstanding contribution to political science and his resolute academic work.
