The Full Professor of Electronic Engineering Gustau Camps-Valls, researcher at the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the University of Valencia, has been appointed as a member of two of the most prestigious academies of science in Europe: The European Academy of Sciences and the European Academy. With this, Camps will contribute to projecting European science in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), mainly in its application to the modelling and understanding of complex terrestrial and climatic systems.
Camps-Valls joined the European Academy of Sciences (EurASC) last May in the “Earth and Environmental Sciences” division. EurASC is an independent international association that recognises the best European scientists, beyond national borders, with the aim of strengthening European science and scientific cooperation.
Now, one month later, Gustau Camps has been appointed as a member of the Academia Europaea (AE) in the “Earth and Cosmic Sciences” section. The Academy aims to advance and spread academic excellence in arts, law, economics, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine and all branches of the natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world, for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages.
Gustau Camps-Valls, PhD in Physics and Professor of Electronic Engineering, is the coordinator of the Image and Signal Processing (ISP) group at the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the University of Valencia. In recent years he has received two research grants from the European Research Council – an ERC Consolidator (2015) and an ERC Synergy grant (2019) – and is the current coordinator of an ELLIS program in Machine Learning for Earth and Climate Sciences”.
“Being a Fellow of the two most important scientific societies in Europe is, in my case, a unique opportunity to highlight the interdisciplinary role of AI in Europe, as well as to address important challenges in the modelling and understanding of complex terrestrial and climatic systems, contributing to the fulfilment of the objectives of sustainable development that, as a society, we urgently need”, comments the scientist. “I will try to represent the interests of Europe in the best possible way, both in strengthening research and in scientific cooperation in my field of expertise, which is at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI). and the sciences of the Earth and the environment”, concludes Camps-Valls.
